Trivia is a free multiple-choice quiz game with 445 original questions in eight categories: science, geography, history, nature and animals, space, math, language and words, and arts and culture. Play solo against the clock or pass one device around a group. It runs in your browser on desktop, phone or Chromebook, with no download and no sign-up.

Game modes

  • Classic: 15 questions from every category. The first five are easy, the next five are medium and the last five are hard. You have three lives, and each wrong answer costs one. Easy questions are worth 100 points, medium 200 and hard 300, so a perfect run scores 3,000.
  • Category: pick one subject and answer ten questions from it, easy to hard. There are no lives here. You get a score out of ten, and your best for each category is saved.
  • Timed Blitz: answer as many questions as you can in 60 seconds. The clock stops while you read each explanation, so you never lose time learning the answer. A wrong answer costs 5 seconds, which makes guessing a risk. Press P or Esc to pause.
  • Pass and Play: 2 to 4 players share one phone, tablet or laptop. Type in names, choose 3, 5 or 8 questions each, and take turns. A “pass the device” screen comes up between turns so nobody sees the next question early. Questions get harder each round and score 100, 200 or 300 points, and the highest total wins. Ties are shown as ties.

How to play

Each question has four choices, and the order is shuffled every time, so you can’t learn answers by position. Click or tap a choice, or press 1 to 4 on a keyboard. The game marks the right answer in green and, if you missed, your pick in red. A one- or two-sentence explanation then tells you why the answer is right. Press Next, Enter or Space to move on.

No question repeats during a session. The game tracks what you’ve seen, even across several games. Only after you’ve worked through every question that fits a mode does that pool start over.

Tips for a higher score

  • Rule out the impossible first. Most questions have one or two choices you can drop right away. Going from four options to two doubles your odds, even when you’re unsure.
  • Read the whole question. Small words matter. “Which of these is NOT,” “in Celsius” and “counting the claws” all change the answer.
  • Read the explanations. They often hold a second fact that may come up as its own question later.
  • Bank points early in Classic. The easy opening questions are where you protect your lives. Slow down there.
  • Find a rhythm in Blitz. The 5-second penalty means a wild guess costs you about one question’s worth of time. If you truly have no idea, a quick elimination guess still beats freezing.
  • Train your weak spots. The stats screen shows your accuracy for each category. Use Category mode to drill your lowest one.

What’s in the question bank

Every question was written for this game and checked against standard reference facts. We kept to things that don’t go out of date, like how many bones are in the adult skeleton, which planet spins on its side, who painted The Night Watch, and what the prefix “sub-” means. That’s why you won’t find current record holders, populations or sports champions. Each category has a mix of easy, medium and hard questions, from capitals and planets up to Avogadro’s number and the deepest lake on Earth.
