Controls

  • Type on your keyboard (or the phone keyboard: tap the Type here box)
  • Backspace corrects a word in Meteor Defense
  • Enter starts or restarts; Esc pauses (P also pauses in Meteor Defense when no word starts with P)
  • Tabs switch between Meteor Defense, Typing Race and Lessons

This typing game turns keyboard practice into three short challenges: defend Dino Town from falling word meteors, race three ghost cars across a passage, and build touch-typing skill with 20 guided lessons. It’s free in your browser with no download or sign-up, and it works with a phone keyboard too. If you only want a plain speed check, try our Typing Test instead.

How to play

Pick a mode from the tabs, then press Enter, click Start or tap the game. On a phone, tapping the game opens your keyboard.

Meteor Defense

  • Words fall from the night sky toward a row of houses and a dino laser cannon. Type a word to zap it before it lands.
  • The first letter you type locks on to the lowest word that starts with that letter, so the most urgent target is always picked first. A yellow ring marks the locked word.
  • Correct letters turn green. A wrong letter shows in red and has to be fixed with Backspace. Backspace all the way to empty and the lock is released, so you can switch targets.
  • Each word that reaches the ground destroys one of your five houses. The run ends when the last house falls.
  • Clean, mistake-free words build a combo. After five in a row every word scores double, rising to x5. A typing mistake or a hit on the town resets the combo.
  • Every eight words zapped raises the level: words fall faster, appear more often and get longer. Each new level also sends a boss meteor with a long word. It falls slowly but costs two houses if it lands, and zapping it rebuilds a house.

Typing Race

  • After a 3-2-1 countdown, type the passage exactly as shown, including capitals and punctuation. Your green car moves forward with every correct character.
  • A wrong key flashes red and your car doesn’t move until you type the right one.
  • Three ghost cars drive at fixed speeds. Rookie races cars at 30, 50 and 70 words per minute; Pro races 50, 70 and 90. Beat all three to finish first.

Lessons

  • Twenty lessons go in order: the home row two keys at a time, then the top row, the bottom row, the number row, and finally capitals and punctuation.
  • An on-screen keyboard lights up the next key. Every key is colored by the finger that should press it, and a line above the keyboard names that finger, plus which Shift key to hold for capitals.
  • Finish a lesson with at least 90% accuracy to pass and unlock the next one. Passed lessons turn green in the lesson picker.

How WPM and accuracy are worked out

Words per minute uses the standard formula: correct characters divided by five, divided by the minutes taken. Accuracy is correct keystrokes divided by all keystrokes, so every wrong key counts against you even if you fix it. Your best Meteor Defense score, best race speed, passed lessons and your last 30 results are saved in your browser, and the line under the game shows your recent average.

Tips to type faster

  • Accuracy first. In every mode a mistake costs more than a slow key. In Meteor Defense it also breaks your combo, so a steady pace scores more than rushing.
  • Watch the lowest word. Words near the town are the dangerous ones, and the lock picks the lowest match. If two words start with the same letter, the lower one gets locked first.
  • Keep your fingers home. Rest them on A S D F and J K L ; and feel for the bumps on F and J. The lessons build this habit before you race.

FAQ

Is this typing game free?

Yes. All three modes and all 20 lessons are free, with no account or download.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap the game or the “Type here” box and your device keyboard opens. Every mode reads what you type from that box, so meteors, races and lessons all work on touch screens.

How do I pause?

Press Esc or the Pause button. In Meteor Defense, P also pauses when no falling word starts with P, so it never gets in the way of a real word. The game pauses itself if you switch tabs.

What speed are the ghost cars?

Each ghost drives at a constant speed: exactly its WPM label times five characters per minute. A 50 WPM ghost covers 250 characters in one minute, so your finishing place shows how your speed compares.

Are the words safe for kids?

Yes. The game uses its own list of nearly 3,000 everyday English words, checked to keep out rude or violent words.

What else can I play?
