Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee is the New York Times’ wildly popular word puzzle — daily in print since 2018, in the NYT app since 2020. 7 letters arranged in a honeycomb hive; one in the centre is required in every word. Find words of 4+ letters. Words using all 7 letters are PANGRAMS. The NYT Spelling Bee has built a passionate community of solvers chasing the “Queen Bee” rank (finding every valid word).

How to play

• 7 letters in a honeycomb: 1 yellow centre + 6 outer.
• Tap letters to build a word. Re-use letters within the same word freely.
• Every word MUST include the centre letter.
• Words must be 4+ letters.
• Submit with Enter.
• Scoring: 4-letter = 1 point. Longer = length points. Pangram = length + 7.
• Rank progresses Beginner → Good → Solid → Nice → Great → Amazing → Genius → Queen Bee.

Beginner strategy

• Find the pangram early. The pangram uses all 7 letters at least once. Highest-scoring single word.
• Anchor on the centre letter. Every word needs it.
• Letter doubling is allowed. “GENESIS” is fine even with S appearing 3 times.
• Common prefixes/suffixes. RE-, UN-, MIS-, OUT-; -ED, -ING, -ER, -ION, -EST.
• Stay common. The dictionary rejects most obscurities.

Intermediate strategy

• Letter clusters. Look for common combos: TH, CH, SH, ST, etc.
• Find the pangram family. Sometimes there are 2-3 pangrams. Find them all.
• 4-letter exhaustion. Methodically check every 4-letter word possible from your letters.
• Rare letter use. Z, Q, X are usually NOT in the puzzle (they’re rare in English). If present, the puzzle is hard.
• Shuffle the hive. Re-arranging visually helps spot new word patterns.

Advanced strategy

• Queen Bee = find every word. The ultimate goal.
• Letter combination matrices. Top solvers mentally build matrices of letter pairs and check each.
• NYT’s curated dictionary. Only words in NYT’s dictionary count. Common but obscure words often miss.
• Daily player solving in 5-10 minutes. Top solvers complete Queen Bee in under 30 minutes.
• Community sharing. NYT Spelling Bee solvers gather online to compare scores and missing words.
