Typing Test measures your words-per-minute (WPM) and accuracy on a keyboard. Originally used to certify secretaries and stenographers in the 19th century, modern typing tests have become a benchmark for keyboard skill. Average typing speed is around 40 WPM; professional typists exceed 80 WPM; the world record exceeds 200 WPM.
How to play
- A passage of text appears.
- Type the text exactly as shown.
- Correctly typed characters advance you; mistakes are flagged.
- Score = WPM (words per minute) × accuracy%.
- Typical tests run 60 seconds or 1-5 minutes.
Beginner strategy
- Accuracy first, speed second. Wrong keystrokes cost more than slow ones.
- Touch-type. Don’t look at the keyboard. Eyes on text.
- Use proper home-row position. Fingers on ASDF and JKL;.
- Don’t pause on hard words. Type through.
- Practice consistent rhythm. Steady pace beats frantic bursts.
Intermediate strategy
- Word patterns. “The”, “and”, “for” are typed as units, not letters.
- Bigram speed. Common pairs (TH, HE, IN) typed as muscle-memory.
- Punctuation reflexes. Period, comma, apostrophe — practice these.
- Number row separately. Numbers are often slower; practice them.
- Capital letter consistency. Shift-with-pinky becomes automatic.
WPM benchmarks
- 20-30 WPM: beginner.
- 40 WPM: average.
- 60-80 WPM: good. Professional minimum.
- 100+ WPM: fast.
- 150+ WPM: very fast.
- 200+ WPM: world-class. The world record is around 216 WPM.
FAQ
- Q: What’s a “word”? A: Standard WPM = 5 characters / 60 seconds. So “WPM” is really “5-character-words per minute.”
- Q: How to improve? A: Practice 15 minutes daily. Speed improves 5-10 WPM per month.
- Q: Keyboard layout? A: QWERTY is standard. Dvorak and Colemak are alternatives — slightly faster but require relearning.
- Q: Mobile typing? A: Different skill — gestural typing on phones is its own discipline.
