Riddles is a free riddle game with 225 riddles and brain teasers, all with answers, hints and a one-line explanation. Solve a fresh Riddle of the Day, type your answers in a ten-riddle round, or let younger players pick from three answers in Kids mode. It runs in your browser with no download or sign-up.

Ways to play

  • Riddle of the Day: one riddle a day, the same for everyone on the same date. A new one appears at midnight on your device’s clock. Solve it daily to build a streak. The daily list goes through every riddle before any comes back.
  • Category rounds: ten riddles from one category, typed in. Pick Easy, Kids, Hard, Logic, Math, Word or Mixed, which draws from every category except Kids.
  • Kids mode: ten gentle riddles and jokes with three answers to tap. A wrong pick is crossed out so your child can try again. No typing needed.

The six riddle categories

  • Easy (40): classic warm-ups like the piano that has keys but can’t open a lock.
  • Kids (40): riddles for kids about animals, food and dinosaurs, plus silly puns.
  • Hard (35): longer riddles where every line is a clue, including the famous riddle of the Sphinx.
  • Logic (36): lateral-thinking brain teasers. Each has a fair answer once you drop a hidden assumption.
  • Math (36): number riddles, from the bat and the ball to clock chimes and palindromic odometers. Every answer is a number, a few numbers or a short sum, and each was checked by computing it.
  • Word (38): riddles about spelling, letters and sounds, like what you find in the middle of nowhere.

Everything is family-friendly, with nothing scary or grown-up.

How to play

Read the riddle, type your answer and press Enter or tap Check. You don’t need the exact wording. Capitals, plurals and small words like “a” and “the” are ignored, so “a candle”, “Candle” and “candles” all count. Many riddles accept more than one fair answer, such as comb or zipper for something with teeth that never bites. Number answers can be typed as digits or words, and you can add units, as in “5 cents”.

A wrong guess can be retried as often as you like. Hint shows a clue, and Reveal shows the answer. After each riddle you see the answer and a line explaining the trick.

Scoring and streaks

Each riddle in a round is worth up to 100 points, so a perfect round scores 1,000. A hint costs 40 points and each wrong guess costs 15, but a solved riddle always earns at least 20. A revealed riddle scores 0. In Kids mode a wrong tap costs 40, and if both wrong answers are tapped, the answer is shown.

Your streak counts riddles solved in a row in any mode, and a reveal sets it back to zero. The results screen shows your score, riddles solved and hints used. Your bests, streaks and recent rounds are saved in your browser on this device.

Tips for solving riddles

  • Look for the word with two meanings. Most riddles hinge on one: the eye of a needle, the mouth of a river, the hands of a clock.
  • Question your assumptions. In logic teasers, the answer usually hides in something you assumed but the riddle never said.
  • Spell it out. Word riddles often refer to the letters, not the thing. Try writing the key word down.
  • Work the numbers. In math riddles, test a simple guess before you answer.
  • Take the hint. A hint still leaves 60 points and keeps your streak alive.
