Our free Rhyming Words tool finds words that rhyme with any word you type. Enter cat and you get hat, flat, chat and acrobat; enter light and you get night, write, bright and polite. It runs in your browser with nothing to install and no sign-up.

What the rhyme finder does

Rhymes are about sound, not spelling, so the tool works from pronunciations. It uses the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, a free dictionary from Carnegie Mellon University that lists the sounds and stressed syllables of about 126,000 English words. From it we kept about 46,000 everyday words, removed slurs and vulgar terms, and ranked each word by how often it appears in a large sample of English text. The dictionary is used under its BSD-style license.

  • Perfect rhymes share the stressed vowel and every sound after it: cat, hat and acrobat, or flower, power and shower. That is why blue rhymes with through and eight rhymes with late, even though they are spelled differently.
  • Near rhymes, also called slant rhymes, share only part of the sound: the same vowel (cat and back) or the same final consonants (cat and bit).
  • Multi-syllable rhymes are the longer perfect rhymes, such as tonight, polite and satellite for light, with the closest-sounding ones first.

Use the syllable buttons to show only one-, two-, three- or four-plus-syllable words, which helps when a line of verse needs a word that fits the beat.

How to use it

  1. Type a word. Or tap one of the examples. You can type a whole phrase; the tool rhymes its last word.
  2. Pick a tab. Perfect, Near or Multi-syllable. The count on each tab tells you how many words it found.
  3. Copy a word. Tap or click any word to copy it. Your recent searches appear as chips under the box.

For a word that is not in the dictionary, the tool makes a labeled best guess from a known word with the same ending. Some words simply have no common perfect rhyme. Orange, purple and silver are the famous examples, and for those the Near tab is the place to look.

The poem helper

The Poem helper is for writing your own verse. Type your lines in the box. For each line it reads the last word and gives your line endings letters, so a couplet that rhymes shows AA and a four-line verse might show AABB or ABAB. Pick the scheme you are aiming for (AABB couplets, ABAB alternate rhyme or the ABCB ballad pattern) and it marks each line that should rhyme as rhyming, a near rhyme or not rhyming. Below that it lists rhymes for the word your next line needs to match. It does not write lines for you; the words and the ideas are yours.

Rhyme Time: a rhyming game for kids

Rhyme Time shows a big word and three choices, and the player taps the one that rhymes. Each level has ten words, and seven right answers unlock the next level. Level 1 uses short words that end with the same letters, like cat and hat. Level 2 adds look-alike traps, such as a word that starts or ends with the same letter but does not rhyme. Level 3 uses two-syllable words, and Level 4 has rhymes with different spellings, like trade and paid. Best scores are saved on your device.

Tips for finding the right rhyme

  • Count the beat. Pick a rhyme with the syllable count your line needs, then read the line aloud.
  • Use near rhymes. Pairs like home and alone share a vowel sound, and a slant rhyme often sounds more natural than a forced perfect one.

FAQ

Is the Rhyming Words tool free?

Yes. It is free with no account and no limit on searches, and the word list is built into the page, so it also works offline once loaded.

Why does a word I expected not show up?

The list covers everyday English words and their common forms. Most names, brands and very rare words are left out, and rhymes depend on the American English pronunciations in the CMU dictionary, so a rhyme that works in another accent may be missing.

What rhymes with orange?

No common English word is a perfect rhyme for orange. The Near tab lists close-sounding words such as porridge, storage and sausage.

Is this a poem generator?

No. It finds rhyming words and checks rhyme schemes, but it does not write poems or lines. You write the poem; the tool helps you find the words.
