This free random word generator gives you random English words in one click. Use it for a creative spark, a vocabulary warm-up or a classroom activity. It also has a Charades mode, a Pictionary mode with a round timer and team scores, and a writing-prompt mode that hands you a random word combo to build a story around. It all runs in your browser.

What the random word generator does

  • Words. Press Generate for 5 random words, or ask for anywhere from 1 to 50. Filter by part of speech (noun, verb, adjective or adverb), difficulty (common, medium or rare), number of letters, number of syllables, and letters the word starts with, ends with or contains. No word appears twice in the same batch.
  • Charades. Actable prompts in five categories: actions (like riding a bike or opening a stuck jar), animals, made-up movie titles, jobs and sports. The movie titles were invented for this tool.
  • Pictionary. Drawable words in three levels. Easy is simple objects like a kite or a castle, medium is things like a lighthouse or a hot air balloon, and hard is ideas like a traffic jam or a solar eclipse.
  • Writing prompt. A random combo of 2 to 6 words that mixes an adjective, nouns, a verb and an adverb. Use every word in a story, poem, scene or sketch.

How to use it

  1. Pick a tab. The Words tab is ready to go, so one press of Generate (or Space) gives you words right away.
  2. Change any filters you need. Your settings are remembered on this device.
  3. Tap a word to copy it, or press Copy to copy the whole batch, separated by commas. Tap the star next to a word to save it to Favorites.
  4. History keeps your recent results and Favorites keeps what you saved, both only in this browser.

Playing Charades and Pictionary

Choose a category or difficulty, a round length from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, 2 to 4 teams and a target score (or no limit). Press Start Team 1 and hand the device to the player who is acting or drawing. Each time their team guesses correctly, tap Got it +1 and a new prompt appears. Tap Skip to pass on a prompt, which scores nothing. When the clock hits zero, the round ends, the tool shows how many points that team scored, and the next team is up. The first team to reach the target score wins, and New game resets the scoreboard.

On a keyboard, Space or Enter counts a correct guess, S skips and P or Esc pauses. The round also pauses if you switch tabs or put the page in the background, and the prompt is hidden while paused. Prompts in a category do not repeat until every one has come up.

How the word lists work

The words come from our own hand-picked lists of more than 1,600 family-friendly English words, each tagged with its part of speech. Some words fit more than one, so “watch” counts as both a noun and a verb. Difficulty is our own sorting of each list into everyday words (like garden or jump), medium words (like lantern or tiptoe) and rare words (like kaleidoscope or meander). It is a rough guide, not an official reading level.

Syllable counts are estimated from the spelling, by counting groups of vowels and dropping common silent endings. That works for most words, but English spelling is irregular, so treat the syllable filter as approximate.

Every pick uses your browser’s cryptographic random source, crypto.getRandomValues, so every matching word has the same chance.

Tips

  • For spelling practice, set Min and Max letters to the same number and pick Common.
  • If no words match, the tool says so. Clear a letter box or widen the length range.
  • For a big group, set Charades to 4 teams and Play to 10 points so everyone gets several turns.

FAQ

Is the random word generator free?

Yes, on phones, tablets and computers, with no account or download.

Are the words safe for kids?

Yes. We wrote every list by hand to be family-friendly, and we check them against a list of offensive words before each update.

Can I get random words without repeats?

Yes. Words in a batch are always different. If fewer words match your filters than you asked for, you get all of them and a note saying so.

Are the Charades movie titles real films?

No. They are silly made-up titles, such as The Pancake Detective, written so they are fun to act out.
