Our free Word Unscrambler turns a jumble of letters into every real English word you can make from them. Type up to 15 letters, add up to two blank tiles if you have them, and the list updates as you type. Words are grouped by length with the longest first, and each one shows its Scrabble-style tile score. It runs in your browser on desktop, tablet or phone, with nothing to download and no sign-up.

What the word unscrambler does

The tool checks your letters against a word list of more than 168,000 English words (the public-domain ENABLE list used by many word games, with slurs and vulgar terms removed). It returns every word from 2 to 15 letters that uses only the tiles you entered. Each tile is used at most once, so if you type one E you won’t get words that need two, unless you add a blank.

  • Grouped by length: the results show 7-letter words, then 6-letter words, and so on down to two letters, with a count for each group. Tap a length chip to jump to that group.
  • Tile scores: each word shows its points using standard Scrabble tile values (Q and Z are 10, J and X are 8, and so on). Board bonuses like double word aren’t included, since they depend on where you play.
  • Tap to copy: tap or click any word to copy it to your clipboard.

How to use it

  1. Type your letters in the box, in any order. Capitals and lower case are both fine, and anything that isn’t a letter is ignored.
  2. Add blanks with a question mark (?) or a space. A blank stands for any letter, and you can use up to two. Letters filled in by a blank show in orange and score 0, just like a blank tile in Scrabble.
  3. Filter the list when you need something specific. “Starts with”, “Contains” and “Ends with” keep only the words that match, and the Length menu shows words of one exact length.
  4. Sort by length (the default, grouped), by score to see your highest-scoring plays first, or A to Z.

On a keyboard, press Enter in the letter box to jump to the first result, use Tab to move between words, and press Enter to copy one.

Worked example: ARTSE

Type the five letters A, R, T, S and E and the unscrambler finds 61 words. The five-letter group holds all five full anagrams: ASTER, RATES, STARE, TARES and TEARS. Below them come 25 four-letter words such as EAST, RATE, REST, SEAT, STAR, TEAR and TSAR, then 22 three-letter words like ART, EAR, EAT, SAT and TEA, and finally 9 two-letter words including AT, ES and RE.

Now add a blank by typing ARTSE?. The list grows to 1,118 words, including 103 six-letter words like CASTER, CRATES, DATERS, EASTER and ERSATZ. Set “Starts with” to B and Length to 6 and you’re left with just three: BAREST, BASTER and BREAST.

Tips for Scrabble, Words With Friends and other word games

  • Look for the full-rack play first. In Scrabble, using all seven tiles in one turn earns a 50-point bonus. Check the top group of results before settling for a shorter word.
  • Learn common endings. Many long words come from adding -S, -ED, -ER, -ING or -EST to a shorter word. Try “Ends with” set to ING to see which ones your rack supports.
  • Hook onto letters on the board. Add a letter that’s already on the board to your rack, then use “Contains” or “Starts with” to find words that build through it.
  • Use the score sort for high-value tiles. When you hold a Q, Z, J or X, sort by score to see which words make the most of it.
  • Keep two-letter words handy. Short words like AX, XI, JO and QAT let you squeeze heavy tiles into tight spots. Filter by length 2 to see them all for your rack.

Different games use slightly different official word lists, so a rare word listed here may not be accepted everywhere. If you’re unsure, pick a more common word from the same group.

FAQ

Is the Word Unscrambler free?

Yes. It’s completely free with no account, no download and no limit on how many times you use it.

How many letters can I enter?

Up to 15, which covers a full Scrabble board row. Blanks count toward that limit, and you can use two at most.

Why do some words score less than I expected?

Any letter supplied by a blank scores 0, the same as in Scrabble. Scores also don’t include board bonuses such as double or triple word squares.

Does it work offline or on a phone?

Yes. The word list is built into the page, so once it has loaded the unscrambler works without any further downloads, on phones, tablets and Chromebooks.

Can I use it while playing against friends?

That’s up to your group. It’s great for practice and for settling arguments about whether a word exists.
