This free name generator gives you random names for games, stories, pets, teams and characters in one tap. Pick from ten categories, shape the results with a few simple options, and save the names you like.

What the name generator makes

  • Fantasy. Elf, dwarf, orc and wizard names built from our own syllable tables. Elves and dwarves get a family name such as a nature or clan word, orcs get a nickname, and wizards get a title.
  • Dinosaur. Made-up names in the classic style, such as a name ending in -saurus, -raptor or -ceratops. Each one shows what it would mean, built from real Greek and Latin roots, such as tachy (swift) and saurus (lizard). These names are invented, not real dinosaurs.
  • Gamer tag. Family-friendly usernames in four styles: AdjectiveNoun, with a number, with an underscore, or two nouns together.
  • Pet. Cute, classic, food, nature, funny and mighty names for dogs, cats and other pets.
  • Team. Sports team names, trivia night team names, esports team names and kids team names where both words start with the same letter.
  • Robot. Model codes, friendly robot names and names with a Mark number.
  • Pirate. Captains and crew members with a first name plus a nickname, a family name or a title like the Bold.
  • Superhero. Original two-word names, one-word names and names with a title such as Captain or Doctor.
  • Town. Villages, cities and fantasy places for maps, stories and tabletop games.
  • Baby name. First names, or a first and middle name, drawn from a list of common given names. We do not rank them by popularity.

How to use it

  1. Tap a category. You get a new batch of names right away.
  2. Change the options if you want. Type picks the style, such as Elf or Trivia night. Gender works for fantasy, pet, pirate, superhero and baby names. Length picks short, medium or long names. Starts with picks the first letter, and How many gives you 1 to 30 names.
  3. Press Generate, or press Space, Enter or G on a keyboard. Keys 1 to 9 and 0 also switch category.
  4. Tap a name to copy it, or press Copy all to copy the whole list, one name per line.
  5. Tap the star to save a name to Favorites. More like this keeps one part of a name, such as its first syllable, ending or one of its words, and makes new names around it.

How the names are made

Most names are built by joining parts: syllables for fantasy names, roots for dinosaur names, and words for gamer tags, teams, robots, pirates, heroes and towns. Pet and baby names come from our own lists. Every pick uses your browser’s cryptographic random source, crypto.getRandomValues, so every part has the same chance.

Each result is checked before you see it. A filter removes anything that contains an offensive word, and a block list skips famous existing names, such as well-known superheroes, fictional teams, film robots and characters from popular fantasy books and games. Dinosaur names are also checked against a list of real dinosaur names. More than a thousand dinosaurs have been named, so a made-up one can still match an obscure real one by chance.

Length counts letters only. For fantasy and baby names it counts the first name; for everything else it counts the whole name. The starting letter skips titles, so Captain Mara starts with M.

Tips

  • For a fantasy party, set Type to Any race and How many to 30, then star the names that fit each character.
  • If a starting letter gives no results, try another letter or set Length to Any. Some letters have no matching parts.

FAQ

Is the name generator free?

Yes. It works on phones, tablets and computers, with no account or download.

Are the dinosaur names real?

No. They are invented from real Greek and Latin roots, and the meaning shown is what those roots add up to. For real dinosaurs and what their names mean, see a reference such as Wikipedia.

Can I use these names in my game or story?

Yes, they are made for that. The block list skips famous names, but it cannot know every name ever used, so check before you put a name on a product.

Are the names safe for kids?

The word lists were written to be family-friendly, and every result passes an offensive-word filter before it is shown.

Where are my favorites saved?

In this browser only.
