This free meme maker lets you put classic bold captions on your own photo or on one of our original backgrounds, add stickers, and download the result as a PNG or JPEG. It runs entirely in your browser, with no sign-up and no watermark.

What you can make

• Your own photo: press Upload your image, drop a picture on the preview, or paste one. The photo is read and drawn on your device and is never uploaded anywhere. Very large photos are scaled down to 4096 pixels on the longest side.
• 18 original backgrounds: plain white and black, sunset and ocean gradients, a spotlight, a two-panel split, simple scenes such as a meadow, a night sky, a desert, space, a chalkboard and a beach, and a cartoon dino in six poses: happy, shocked, sad, thinking, smug and angry. All of them were drawn for this tool, so there are no copied meme templates.
• 17 stickers: a star, heart, arrow, speech and thought bubbles, a burst, a lightning bolt, a crown, a flame, a sparkle, question and alert badges, a check, a cross, a highlight circle, a drop and a little dino head. Each one can be recolored.

How to use the meme maker

• Captions: a new meme starts with top and bottom captions. Tap one on the preview (or its chip on the Text tab) and type. Press + Text to add as many more as you like.
• Move, resize and rotate: drag a caption or sticker to move it. The square corner and edge handles change the size of the box, and the round handle above it turns it. Rotation snaps to straight angles when you are close, and Shift gives 15 degree steps.
• Style: choose Impact, Arial Black, a sans, a serif or a typewriter font from your device, any text color, an outline color and width (or no outline), left, center or right alignment, and the AA button for all capitals.
• Picture tools: Rotate turns the picture by 90 degrees, Flip mirrors it, and Crop lets you drag a frame over the part you want, freely or as 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 9:16 or 4:3.
• Undo and redo: the arrow buttons or Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y step back and forward through your changes.

How auto-fit works

Every caption sits in its own box. With Auto-fit on, the tool tries sizes and wraps the words onto lines until it finds the largest size where every line, including the outline, stays inside the box. Make the box wider and the text can grow onto fewer lines. Make it taller and long captions get room for more lines. If you turn Auto-fit off, the size slider sets a fixed size, and long text may then run past the box.

Download your meme

On the Export tab, pick PNG or JPEG and a size. Original keeps the full resolution of your picture after cropping, so a 3000 pixel photo stays 3000 pixels wide. 1080 px scales the meme to 1080 pixels wide, a common size for social posts, and keeps its shape. The output size is shown before you press Download.

Recent memes

Each download saves a small thumbnail in the Recent tab, up to your last 12. Memes made on our backgrounds can be opened again and edited. For memes made on your own photo, only the thumbnail is kept, so upload the photo again to make changes. Everything is stored in this browser only, and you can delete any thumbnail with a second tap on its x.

Tips for better memes

• Keep it short. A few words on top and a punchline at the bottom read fastest.
• Use the outline. White text with a black outline stays readable on light and dark parts of a photo.
• Crop first. Crop and rotate the picture before placing captions, since captions keep their place relative to the frame.
• Mind the rights. Use photos you took yourself or have permission to use.

Is this meme maker free?

Yes. Every feature is open, with no account, no watermark and no purchases.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your picture is processed by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the finished meme downloads straight to you.

Can I add more than two captions?

Yes. Press + Text for each extra caption. Each one has its own position, size, rotation, colors and font.

Why does my text look different on another device?

The tool uses fonts already installed on your device, such as Impact. If a font is missing, a similar bold font is used instead.
