Match-3 is the puzzle game format that’s defined casual mobile gaming since the 2000s — Candy Crush Saga alone has been downloaded billions of times, and the genre is one of the biggest earners in mobile gaming. The mechanic: a grid of colored tiles; swap adjacent tiles to create groups of 3+ matching tiles; matched tiles vanish; new tiles cascade down. Simple, addictive, infinitely expandable.

How to play

  • Our board is an 8×8 grid of gems in 6 colours, each with its own shape.
  • Click two adjacent gems to swap them, or swipe a gem on a touch screen.
  • If the swap creates a line of 3+ matching tiles (horizontal or vertical), those tiles VANISH.
  • Tiles above the vanished ones fall down to fill gaps.
  • New tiles appear at the top to fill the board.
  • Cascading matches: falling tiles can form new matches automatically, triggering more vanishes.
  • A swap that doesn’t make a match slides back and costs nothing.
  • Each gem cleared scores 10 points, with bonuses for big clears and chain reactions.
  • Level 1 gives you 30 moves to reach 1,000 points. Hit the target and the next level starts with a higher target and more moves; run out of moves first and the game ends. Your best score is saved in your browser.

Beginner strategy

  • Look for guaranteed matches. Pairs of same-color tiles adjacent to a third of that color = immediate match.
  • Make matches that set up cascades. A match that drops a row of new tiles often creates additional matches automatically.
  • Don’t make a move just because it’s available. There’s no clock, so take the time to find the best swap on the board.
  • Use bottom-up perspective. Matches near the bottom drop more new tiles, creating bigger cascades.
  • Save power-ups for big moments. Striped gems and colour bombs are rare and powerful.

Special tiles and combos

  • Match 4 in a line: creates a “striped” gem. A horizontal match of 4 gives a gem that clears its whole column; a vertical match of 4 gives one that clears its whole row.
  • Match 5 in a line: creates a “color bomb”. Swap it with any neighbouring gem to clear every gem of that colour.
  • Specials fire when swapped: swapping a striped gem activates it even if the swap makes no match, and it also fires if it gets caught in another clear.
  • Chain specials: a striped gem caught in a stripe or colour-bomb blast goes off too, so specials can set each other off.
  • Power tile chains are how you hit the bigger targets on later levels.

Intermediate strategy

  • Pre-plan cascade chains. A perfect first move can set up 5-10 cascading matches. Look at how falling tiles will land.
  • Count your moves. Each level has a fixed move budget, so check how many points per move you need to reach the target.
  • Level objectives elsewhere. Mobile match-3 games often ask you to collect specific tiles or clear jellies. Here the only goal is the score target.
  • Don’t make small matches if a better one is available. A 3-match is good. A 4-match creates a stripe. A 5-match creates a colour bomb. Always match the highest count when possible.
  • Line up stripes. A row stripe and a column stripe going off in the same blast clear a cross through the board.

Advanced strategy

  • The “color bomb” multiplier. Fire a colour bomb at the colour that has the most gems (or any striped gems) on the board. Every gem cleared is worth 10 points.
  • Plan the last moves. When moves are running low, aim each swap at the biggest clear available rather than setting up for later.
  • Read board for “dead zones.” Areas where same-color tiles can’t reach each other. Plan moves to break these.
  • Speed solving. Top Match-3 players solve levels in 30-90 seconds by visual pattern recognition.
  • Watch for chain reactions. Cascades from falling gems score extra and can create new specials for free.

Match-3 history

  • 1994 — Shariki: the first true Match-3 game. Russian developer Eugene Alemzhin.

Why Match-3 is so successful

  • Visual satisfaction. Matching colorful tiles is viscerally rewarding.
  • Cascading rewards. Chain reactions feel like skill but reward luck.
  • Short levels. 30-second to 3-minute levels. Fits commute play.
  • Endless content. Match-3 levels are easy to produce. Candy Crush has thousands of levels.
  • Meta-progression hooks. Home decorating, story elements give long-term goals.
  • Universal accessibility. Anyone can play.

Common mistakes

  • Spamming small matches. Bigger matches = better special tiles.
  • Ignoring cascading potential. Plan for what falls after.
  • Wasting power tiles. Don’t fire a colour bomb at a colour with only a few gems on the board.
  • Rushing through levels. Take time to see the optimal move.

Variants

  • Bejeweled. The classic.
  • Candy Crush Saga. Story-mode Match-3 with lives and boosters.
  • Gardenscapes / Homescapes. Match-3 + home decoration meta-game.
  • Royal Match. Modern Match-3 with king-rescue narrative.
  • Puzzle & Dragons. Match-3 + RPG combat. Massive in Japan.

FAQ

  • Q: How many colors? A: Our board uses 6. Most match-3 games use 5-6 distinct colors per level.
  • Q: What’s the highest-value match? A: Match 5 in a line = color bomb. Setting off several specials in one move creates the biggest clears.
  • Q: Best strategy for hard levels? A: Plan combos, save power tiles, and work out how many points per move the target needs.
  • Q: Does match-3 reward speed? A: Not here: there’s no timer, only a move limit. Accurate matches beat fast matches.
