This free writing prompts generator gives you a story idea in one tap. It works as a story generator, a plot generator and a character maker, and it has a text box and a timer so you can start writing right away. Every idea is built in your browser from our own hand-written lists. No AI writes for you; the story is yours.

What the generator makes

  • Prompt. A one-line writing prompt, such as a hero who wants something, a problem in the way and a place where it happens.
  • Plot. A plot skeleton with a name, a hero, a goal, a problem, a setting and a twist, plus a one-sentence summary.
  • Character. A name, a role, a trait, a flaw, a secret and something the character wants.
  • Setting. A place, a time, the weather, something you can hear and something odd about the place.
  • First line. One of 154 original opening sentences to start a story with.
  • Story dice. Nine picture dice, such as a dragon, a castle, a key, the moon and a hot air balloon. Roll them and write a story that uses the pictures.

Seven genres shape the ideas: fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, adventure, funny, spooky and dinosaur stories. Spooky means kid-safe spooky, like friendly ghosts, creaky stairs and fog, never anything scary or gory. Any genre picks one at random each time.

How to use it

  1. Pick a generator at the top. A new idea appears straight away.
  2. Choose a Genre. In a classroom, set Classroom to Grades K–2, 3–5 or 6–8.
  3. Like part of an idea? Tap the lock next to it. Press New and everything that is not locked rerolls. On Story dice, tap a die to keep it before you roll again.
  4. Press Use in my writing to copy the idea into the text box below, or Copy to paste it somewhere else.
  5. Pick a sprint length from 1 to 30 minutes and press Start. When time is up you get a soft beep and the number of words you wrote during the sprint.

On a keyboard, Space, Enter or G makes a new idea, keys 1 to 6 switch generator, F saves a favorite and Esc pauses the timer. Shortcuts are switched off while you type in the text box.

Classroom grade bands

Each entry in our lists is marked for an age range. Grades K–2 uses only the simplest entries and short prompt patterns, with words young readers know, like baby dragon, lost egg and magic forest. Grades 3–5 adds longer goals, trickier problems and twists. Grades 6–8 drops the youngest entries and adds richer vocabulary and harder tasks. A short tip under the buttons suggests a writing goal for the chosen band, such as three sentences for K–2 or a 300-word scene for 6–8. The bands are a guide, not a reading-level test.

Writing and saving

The text box keeps a steady size and scrolls inside, and the word count updates as you type. Your writing is saved in this browser as you go, so you can close the page and come back. Saved ideas go to Favorites, and the last 30 ideas you rolled are in Recent. Nothing leaves your device, so if you clear your browser data or switch devices, copy your story out first.

Tips for better stories

  • Lock the hero and reroll the problem a few times. The same character in a new situation often sparks a better idea than a whole new prompt.
  • Use the Character generator for your main character and the Setting generator for the place, then roll a Plot and keep only the twist.
  • For a quick warm-up, take a first line, set the timer to 5 minutes and do not stop typing until it beeps.
