Whack-a-Mole
Controls
- Click moles as they pop up.
- Moles only count if you hit them while they're up.
- 30 seconds per round — go fast.
Whack-a-Mole (also called Mole Buster, Mole Mash, or simply Whack) is the 1976 arcade game by TOGO of Japan. Pop-up moles appear in random holes; hit them with a hammer for points; speed increases as the game progresses. The game has become so iconic that “playing whack-a-mole” is now a common metaphor for solving recurring problems.
How to play
- Holes appear in a grid (typically 3×3 or 4×4).
- Moles randomly pop out of holes for short periods.
- Click or hit them before they disappear.
- Each successful hit = points.
- Speed increases over time.
- Sometimes special moles appear (golden = more points; bomb = penalty).
Beginner strategy
- Focus on a region. Don’t try to cover the whole board at once.
- React fast. Moles disappear quickly.
- Hit on appearance. Click the moment you see one.
- Use peripheral vision. See multiple moles at once.
- Practice rhythm. Develop a steady scanning pattern.
Intermediate strategy
- Multiple-mole moments. When 2+ moles appear, plan rapid hit sequence.
- Avoid bombs. Some variants penalize clicks on wrong targets.
- Speed scaling awareness. Late-game requires faster reflexes.
- Score multipliers. Golden moles often score 3-5x — prioritize them.
- Don’t double-click. Wasted clicks on already-hit moles.
