This fraction game turns a dinosaur bakery into five ways to practice fractions. Cut pies, pizzas and cakes into equal slices to see what a fraction means, put fractions on a number line, match equivalent fractions, add and subtract them, and simplify them to lowest terms. It’s free to play in your browser on a computer, tablet, Chromebook or phone.
How to play
Slice and serve
- Each order asks for an amount, such as 3/4 of a pizza. Press + or – to choose how many equal slices to cut. The bottom number tells you how many slices each whole needs.
- Tap slices to fill them with cherry filling, toppings or frosting until you have filled the top number, then press Serve it.
- Level 1 uses unit fractions like 1/5, level 2 uses fractions like 7/10, and level 3 brings three wholes with improper fractions and mixed numbers, so 1 2/3 means filling 5 slices of thirds.
Number line
- Drag each fraction card to its spot on the line, or tap a card and then tap the line. The line is cut into equal jumps, and a card only stays where it really belongs.
- Equivalent fractions snap to the same point, so 1/2 and 2/4 end up stacked on top of each other.
- A wrong spot tells you what fraction that spot really is and whether to move left or right. When every card is placed, the game writes the fractions in order with < and = signs.
- Level 3 stretches the line from 0 to 2 and adds improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Match-up
- Eight cards hide four pairs of equivalent fractions. Tap two cards that show the same amount.
- Each card has a bar model, so you can see that 2/3 and 4/6 fill the same part of the bar. In level 3, some cards show only the bar and some only the numbers.
Add and take
- Type the top and bottom of the answer with the keypad or your keyboard, then press Check. Any equivalent answer counts, and the game shows it in lowest terms and as a mixed number when it’s more than 1.
- Levels 1 and 2 use like denominators. Level 3 uses unlike denominators such as 1/2 + 1/3. Press Help and the bars are recut to a common denominator: 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6.
Simplify
- Divide the top and bottom by 2, 3, 5 or 7. The button only works if both numbers divide evenly.
- When nothing more divides both numbers, press Lowest terms. In the hardest level, a few fractions are already in lowest terms, so check before you divide.
Stars, review and saved progress
The mastery map has 15 levels, three for each game. Every round earns up to 3 stars: a round with no mistakes earns 3, one or two mistakes earn 2, and finishing always earns at least 1.
Any problem you miss goes on the review list. Normal rounds bring review problems back now and then, and the Review missed button runs a round made only of them. Get a problem right twice and it leaves the list. Your stars, review list and totals are saved in your browser.
Tips for learning fractions
- The bottom number names the slice. Fourths are 4 equal slices of a whole. The top number counts how many of those slices you have.
- Bigger bottom, smaller slices. 1/8 is less than 1/4, because the whole is cut into more pieces.
- Only add slices of the same size. To add 1/2 and 1/3, rename both as sixths first. Then add the tops and keep the bottom.
- Simplify in small steps. If both numbers are even, halve them. Then try 3, then 5. You can always undo a step.
FAQ
Is this fraction game free?
Yes. It’s completely free, with no account, no download and nothing to install.
What grade is it for?
It’s aimed at grades 3 to 6. Slicing, the number line and match-up suit kids meeting fractions in grade 3, adding and subtracting like denominators fits grade 4, and unlike denominators and simplifying fit grades 5 and 6.
Does it accept answers that aren’t simplified?
Yes. In Add and take, any equivalent answer is marked right, so 2/4 counts for 1/2. The game then shows the answer in lowest terms.
Does it cover mixed numbers?
Yes. Level 3 of Slice and serve asks for amounts like 2 1/4, level 3 of the number line includes mixed numbers between 1 and 2, and answers bigger than 1 are also shown as mixed numbers.
