This free emoji maker lets you build your own emoji or avatar from 135 original parts, then download it as a PNG with a transparent background. Recolor any part, save favorites in a gallery, try the dino-moji set of cute dinosaur heads and play a mood game. It runs in your browser, with no sign-up.

What you can make

  • 12 face shapes: round, rounded square, tall oval, wide, egg, round ears, pointy ears and ghost, plus four dinosaur heads.
  • 25 eyes and 26 mouths: hearts, stars, spirals, winks and sleepy lids, and mouths from a small smile to a big laugh, a yawn or bubble gum.
  • Details: 10 eyebrow styles, 9 noses, 7 cheek styles such as blush and freckles, and 9 glasses including sunglasses, heart frames and goggles.
  • 15 hats and toppers: party hat, crown, bow, cap, beanie, top hat, headphones, flower, halo, wizard hat, propeller cap, sprout, chef hat, dino horns and dino spikes.
  • 13 effects: tears, a sweat drop, floating hearts, dizzy stars, sparkles, Zzz, an anger mark, question marks, music notes, steam and more.
  • 9 backgrounds: such as a circle, sunburst, starry sky, splat or polka dots, or none at all.

All of the art is drawn for this tool as simple vector shapes. It does not copy any phone or app emoji set.

How to use the emoji maker

  • Pick a part: choose a tab such as Eyes or Hats, then tap a thumbnail. Each thumbnail previews the part on your face. Tapping a part on the big preview jumps to its tab.
  • Recolor it: the color row under the parts changes the part in the open tab; + opens a full color picker. Hats, glasses, effects and noses start on Auto, which gives each one its own natural color, like a gold crown or blue tears.
  • Random and Dino-moji: Random makes a surprise face from the regular shapes. The Dino button makes a dino-moji: it always picks a dinosaur head in a dino color and often adds dino eyes, fangs, nostrils, spots, horns or spikes.
  • Undo, Redo and Reset: undo steps back one change at a time, redo replays it, and Reset brings back the starter smiley.

Download your emoji as a PNG

Pick a size of 128, 256 or 512 pixels and press PNG. The image is square, and everything outside the drawing is transparent, so it sits cleanly on any color. With BG ticked, the background shape you chose is part of the picture and only the corners are clear. Untick BG to leave the background out and keep just the face.

Save to the gallery

Press Save (or the S key) to keep the emoji in the Gallery tab. It holds up to 60 creations. Tap any of them to load it back into the editor, or tap the small x twice to delete it. The gallery, your current emoji and your scores are stored in this browser only.

Match the mood game

Open the Mood game tab and press Start. Each round shows a mood word such as surprised, sleepy, nervous or in love, and the face resets to plain dot eyes and a straight mouth. Build a face that shows the mood, then press Check. There are 16 moods and each game picks 5 of them.

  • Every part has mood tags. Eyes and mouth are worth 35 points each, eyebrows and effects 15 each, and glasses and cheeks 10 each when the mood has a fitting choice, such as sunglasses for cool.
  • Your score is the share of those points your face earns, out of 100. The hint after each round names the parts that matched and the ones to change.
  • The results screen shows your total out of 500, and your best total and a chart of recent games are saved.

Tips

  • Start with eyes and mouth. They carry most of the expression and most of the mood points.
  • Eyebrows matter. The same smile reads as happy, worried or cheeky depending on the brows.
  • Pick contrast. Dark eyes on a dark face are hard to read, so recolor one of them.
