Coloring Book is a free online coloring game with 24 original line-art pages to fill in, from a cat with a ball of yarn to a Tyrannosaurus next to a smoking volcano. Tap an area and the color fills it right up to the lines, or switch to the brush and paint freely. You can play it in your browser with no download or sign-up, on a computer, tablet or phone, and every page saves as you go.

How to play

Pick one of the four sets at the top: Animals, Dinosaurs, Vehicles or Patterns. Each set has six pages, and the thumbnails show your colors so far. Tap a page to open it.

  • Fill: choose a color and tap any area of the drawing. Every area is its own closed shape, so the color fills exactly that shape and never leaks past the black lines. Tap again with a different color to change it.
  • Brush: paint freely in four sizes, from a fine line to a wide stroke. The paint goes under the black outlines, so the drawing stays crisp, and it stays inside the page.
  • Eraser: drag to rub out brush paint. A single tap with the eraser clears the fill from the area you tap.
  • Undo and Redo: take back any fill, stroke or reset, one step at a time. Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y (Cmd on a Mac) work too.
  • Reset page: tap it twice to clear the whole page. If you change your mind, Undo brings the page back.

The counter at the top right shows how many areas you have colored, such as 12/26. Press Done at any time to see your picture and your progress. When every area on a page is colored, a Page complete panel appears with your finished picture.

Colors and palettes

There are seven palettes of 14 colors each: Rainbow, Pastel, Nature, Ocean, Sunset, Neon and Dino. Switch between them with the palette menu, or use the custom color picker next to it for any other shade.

Zoom in for the small parts

Some areas are tiny, like the cat’s eyes, the windows on the airplane or the outer petals of the Flower Mandala. Zoom in up to 600 percent to reach them.

  • On a phone or tablet: pinch to zoom, and drag with two fingers to move around. One finger always colors, and the page itself won’t scroll while you work on the drawing.
  • On a computer: scroll the mouse wheel over the drawing to zoom toward the pointer. To move around, use the Move tool, hold Space and drag, or drag with the middle mouse button.
  • Buttons: the minus, plus and Fit buttons work everywhere. Fit returns to the whole page.

The 24 pages

Animals: Cat and Yarn, Night Owl, Tropical Fish, Garden Turtle, Elephant and Butterfly. Dinosaurs: Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Long-Neck Sauropod, Pteranodon and Dino Hatchling. Vehicles: Family Car, City Bus, Space Rocket, Sailboat, Steam Train and Airplane. Patterns: Flower Mandala, Star Mandala, Ring Mandala, Sunburst, Patchwork Quilt and Fish Scales.

The picture pages have between about 15 and 40 areas to color, with skies, ground and small details. The pattern pages go much further: the Ring Mandala has 120 areas and the Patchwork Quilt has 146, which makes them a calm, longer project.

Tips

  • Start with the background. Fill the sky and ground first. It makes the main colors easier to judge.
  • Mix the two tools. Fill the big areas, then add shading, stripes or spots with a small brush. Brush strokes sit under the outlines, so you can paint right up to an edge and it still looks neat.
  • Try a limited palette on mandalas. Picking three or four colors from one palette and repeating them ring by ring gives a pattern page a clean, balanced look.
