These free online flash cards are a flashcard maker and a study app in one. Pick one of 8 ready-made decks or make your own, then flip through the cards, let spaced repetition decide what to review, test yourself with typed or multiple-choice questions, or race the clock in a Match game.

What the flash cards tool does

The tool opens on the US State Capitals deck, so the first tap flips a card. The menu at the top switches decks and the tabs switch study modes.

Study modes

  • Cards: flip with a tap, a click or Space, and swipe or use the arrow keys to move on. Star a card (S) or mark it hard (H), then use the Starred and Hard filters to study only those. Shuffle mixes the order, and Back first lets you practice in reverse.
  • Learn: spaced repetition based on the SM-2 algorithm. Reveal the answer, then grade yourself Again, Hard, Good or Easy. A card you get right comes back after 1 day, then 6 days, then a longer gap each time. Again starts the card over at 1 day, and cards graded Again or Hard come back in the same session until you get them. The tab shows how many cards are due today and how many new cards are left; you choose 5, 10, 20 or all new cards per day.
  • Test: 10, 20 or all cards as multiple-choice questions, typed questions or a mix, answering with the back or the front. Typed answers ignore capitals, accents, punctuation, a leading “the” or “to” and words in brackets, and accept a small typo. Numbers must be exact. If your answer was fine, press “I was right”.
  • Match: 6 terms and 6 answers appear as tiles. Tap a term, then its answer, until the board is clear. Each wrong pair adds 1 second, and your best time for each deck is saved.

Making your own deck

Press + New, give the deck a title and add cards in the Edit tab. You can use **bold** and *italic* and press Enter for a new line. To add many cards at once, open Bulk add and paste one card per line, such as “perro – dog”. Tabs, commas, colons and hyphens also work, so a list copied from a spreadsheet goes in as it is.

The CSV tab downloads the deck as a CSV file with Front, Back, Starred and Hard columns, and imports a CSV or TSV file. The Share tab packs the whole deck into a compressed link. Nothing is uploaded: whoever opens the link can add a copy. The tool warns you when a link gets long enough for some chat apps to cut it short.

The starter decks

  • US State Capitals (50 cards)
  • Times Tables 2–12 (from 2 × 1 to 12 × 12)
  • Periodic Table: Elements 1–20
  • World Capitals of the 30 largest countries by area
  • Spanish Basics: greetings, phrases, numbers and colors
  • Dinosaur Names and Meanings (30 dinosaurs)
  • Planets in Order
  • Sight Words: the 40 Dolch pre-primer words, each in a short sentence

The capitals, elements, dinosaur meanings and planets come from the same Wikipedia-sourced data as our map, periodic table, dinosaur and solar system tools.

Tips

Grade honestly in Learn mode, since pressing Good on a guess pushes the card days away. Keep to one fact per card, and test both directions by switching Answer with to Front.

FAQ

Are these flash cards free?

Yes. Every mode, the starter decks, CSV files and share links are free, with no sign-up.

Where are my decks saved?

In your browser’s storage on this device. Clearing site data removes them, and they do not sync to other devices. Download a CSV file as a backup.

How does spaced repetition decide when a card is due?

Each card keeps a repetition count, an interval and an ease factor that starts at 2.5. Correct answers set the interval to 1 day, then 6 days, then the last interval times the ease factor, which rises when you press Easy and falls when you press Hard. The Stats tab shows how many cards are new, learning and mastered (an interval of 21 days or more).

Can I import flashcards from another app?

If it can export a CSV file or a list with one card per line, yes. Use the CSV tab for a file, or paste the list into Bulk add.

Can I study only the cards I keep getting wrong?

Yes. Mark them hard or star them, then pick the Hard or Starred filter in Cards or Test. After a test, Retest missed asks only the cards you got wrong.
