Visual Memory

You can rate the game:

Controls

  • Click Start. A grid flashes some cells white for ~1 second.
  • Memorize the lit cells.
  • Click all the cells you saw.
  • Wrong cell = lose a life. 3 lives total.
  • Grid expands from 3×3 to 6×6 as you advance.

Visual Memory is the spatial-recall cognitive test popularized by Human Benchmark. A grid of squares appears, some flash white for a moment, then go blank. You click all the squares that lit up — without clicking any that didn’t. Each successful round adds another lit square; the grid grows as you advance.

How to play

  • Click Start. The board displays a grid (3×3 to start).
  • Some squares flash white for ~1 second.
  • Click every square that lit up. Correct = green.
  • Wrong square = lose a life. 3 lives total.
  • Clear all lit squares to advance.
  • Grid grows: 3×3 (1-5), 4×4 (6-10), 5×5 (11-15), 6×6 (16+).

Beginner strategy

  • Chunk by position. “Top-left cluster + lone bottom-right” beats 4 separate positions.
  • Use grid coordinates as anchors. “Row 2, column 3” is faster to encode.
  • Look at the pattern, not the cells. Shapes are easier than positions.
  • Click confident ones first. Certain clicks before uncertain ones.
  • Don’t rush after the flash. Pause to consolidate.

Intermediate strategy

  • Region-based memory. Top-left, top-right, etc. quadrants.
  • Edge mapping. Edges easier to remember than centre cells.
  • Cross-reference patterns. If lit cells form a recognizable shape, remember the shape.
  • Click in same order. Encode path order = recall path order.
  • Lives management. 3 lives — manage uncertain clicks.

How you compare

On Human Benchmark’s reference scale: average is around level 11-12. Above 15 puts you in top 25%, above 20 is exceptional. The mechanic measures visuospatial working memory — well-established in cognitive psychology.

FAQ

  • Q: What’s tested? A: Visuospatial working memory.
  • Q: How long is the flash? A: About 1 second + scaling with cell count.
  • Q: Best strategy? A: Chunk + shape recognition, not individual cells.
  • Q: How to improve? A: Practice 10-15 sessions; visualization skills grow.
