Sledding Game is a side-view sledding game where you ride a sled down rolling snowy hills with real momentum. Gravity pulls you down every slope, and your speed carries you up and over the next rise. Tuck for speed, lean back to slow down, hop over rocks, snowmen and trees, and fly off snow ramps. You can play it online free in your browser with no download, on a keyboard, a mouse or a phone’s touch screen.

How to play

  • Tuck for speed: hold the Right arrow, D or S (or hold the right third of the game on a phone or with a mouse). Your rider ducks low, which cuts wind drag and gives a small push, so you pick up speed faster on every downhill.
  • Lean back to slow down: hold the Left arrow or A (or the left third of the game). Your rider sits back and digs in, which scrubs off speed. Use it to set up a hop.
  • Hop: press Space, the Up arrow or W, or tap the middle of the game. A hop clears rocks, snowmen and trees, and reaches the snowflakes and mittens that float higher above the snow.
  • Crashes are soft: riding into an obstacle, or landing at the wrong angle, tumbles your rider into the snow. Nobody gets hurt, but you lose most of your speed.

Jumps, landings and flips

Ramps and sharp crests throw the sled into the air. While you are airborne, press tuck to spin the sled forward or lean back to spin it backward. A tuck you were already holding when you took off does not spin you, so let go and press again. If you leave it alone, the sled slowly levels itself toward the slope below.

To land cleanly, the bottom of the sled needs to be roughly flat against the slope you come down on. Coming down nose-first into an uphill, or tail-first onto a steep drop, ends in a tumble. Spin all the way around and land it for a flip, which pays 5 bonus snowflakes. Flips need a lot of hang time, so try a hop right at the lip of a big ramp.

The 10 hills

Each hill has a fixed course and its own goal, and clearing one unlocks the next (plus a 25-snowflake bonus the first time). Bunny Hill just asks you to reach the bottom. Snowflake Lane and Snowflake Ridge want a set number of snowflakes, Snowman Alley and Frozen Creek Run have a time limit, Mitten Meadow hides five lost mittens high above the snow (grab at least four), and Jump Park wants four clean landings with real hang time. In Backyard Race, Pine Forest and the Big Hill Championship you race one, two and then three other kids, and you have to reach the bottom first.

Endless run and the sled shop

The endless run is a downhill that never ends. The terrain is generated as you go, so every run is different, and it gets steeper, with more obstacles and bigger ramps, the further you get. The third tumble ends the run, and your best distance is saved in your browser.

Snowflakes you collect, mittens (worth 10 each) and flip bonuses all go into your snowflake bank, which you spend in the sled shop. You start on a red plastic sled, and four more are for sale:

  • Saucer: spins fast and forgives sloppy landings, but brakes poorly.
  • Inner tube: bounces into much higher hops and lands almost anything, but it is a little slower.
  • Toboggan: very fast in a tuck, but slow to rotate and strict about landings.
  • Wooden runner sled: the slickest glide and the strongest brake.

Tips

  • Tuck on the downhills. Speed carries you over the next rise, so build it wherever the hill drops.
  • Hop early rather than late. At high speed, press hop while the obstacle is still a short way ahead. If you wait until it is under your nose, you will clip it.
  • In races, avoid tumbles. The other kids never crash, so one tumble can cost you first place.
