Skiing Game is a top-down downhill skiing game with three race disciplines, a 15-event career and an endless open mountain to cruise. Pass slalom gates on the correct side, carve and tuck through downhill gates on groomed snow, powder and ice, and throw spins and grabs off freestyle kickers. You can play it free in your browser with no download, on a keyboard or a phone’s touch screen.
How to play
- Carve, don’t skid: press Left or Right (or A and D) to turn. The edge builds up the longer you hold, so short taps make a clean carve. A hard turn at high speed asks more of the snow than it can give: the skis slide sideways, the Skid label appears, snow sprays and you lose speed fast.
- Tuck: hold Down or S to drop into a tuck. It cuts air drag, so you go much faster on straights, but you can only turn gently while tucked.
- Snow types: groomed corduroy is the standard surface. Fresh powder is soft and slows you down, and the snow beside the course counts as powder too. Ice is fast, but your edges barely grip, so in a turn the skis keep sliding the way you were going before they bite.
- Jump: press Space, Up or W for a small hop.
Hitting a tree or a lift pylon knocks you over for just over a second.
The three disciplines
- Slalom: each flag has a pennant that points to the side you must pass it on, with an arrow on the snow showing the same side. Red flags are passed on the right, blue flags on the left, so you swing back and forth across the hill. A missed gate adds 5 seconds.
- Downhill: pairs of red flags make wide gates spread down a longer course. Ski between them (a miss costs 3 seconds), tuck whenever you can and pick your line through powder and ice bands.
- Freestyle: hit a kicker and you launch. The faster you go, the more hang time you get, and the big kickers throw you higher. In the air, hold Left or Right to spin and hold Jump to grab. You must land on a multiple of 180 degrees (forward or switch) with the grab already released, or you crash and the trick scores nothing.
Trick points come from the spin (a 180 is worth 100, a 360 250, a 540 450, a 720 700 and so on), a grab held for at least a quarter of a second (150 points and up) and a small bonus for hang time.
Career, medals and gear
The career has 15 events, five of each discipline, and each one gets longer or trickier than the last. Finishing an event unlocks the next. Each event has gold, silver and bronze targets: times for slalom and downhill, points for freestyle. Your best result is saved in your browser, and a translucent ghost of your best run skis alongside you the next time you race that event.
Medals unlock gear. Carver skis grip better on edge, Twin Tips spin faster in the air, and Race GS skis have less drag in a tuck. Six outfit colors unlock along the way, ending with gold for a medal in all 15 events.
Open Mountain
Open Mountain is an endless free run down a slope full of trees, mogul fields, kickers, powder and ice patches under the chairlifts. The lift pylons are solid, so steer around them. Now and then a friendly orange groomer drives across the slope, smoothing a strip of snow as it goes. If you bump into it you just stop and it beeps hello. Your score is the distance you ski plus any trick points, and three falls end the run.
Tips
- Start your turn early. In slalom, begin turning toward the next flag as soon as you pass the current one. Late, hard turns turn into skids.
- Go straight on ice. Turn before an ice band, then run straight across it.
- Count your rotation. The air label shows your spin in degrees. Stop spinning a little before a 180-degree mark, and let go of the grab before you come down.
