Red Light Green Light is the classic playground game of running and freezing, set here in a sunny park with a friendly dino as the stoplight. Hold to run when the dino calls green light, let go the moment it calls red light, and race three CPU kids to be the first to touch the stoplight. Play this red light green light game online free in your browser, with no download, on a keyboard, a mouse or a phone.
How to play Red Light Green Light on the playground
- Pick a stoplight: one player is the “stoplight.” They stand at the finish line with their back to everyone else. Everyone else lines up on the start line.
- Green light: when the stoplight calls “green light,” the players move toward the finish line
- Red light: when the stoplight calls “red light,” they turn around to face the players. Everyone has to freeze. Anyone the stoplight sees moving goes back to the start line.
- Winning: the first player to touch the stoplight, or cross the finish line in some versions, wins. The winner usually becomes the next stoplight, and a new round begins.
There are many variations. A popular one adds “yellow light,” which means move slowly. Some groups hop or tiptoe on green instead.
How to play the online game
You run in the bottom lane, marked YOU. The dino stands past the checkered finish line with its back to the kids while the light is green. A traffic light and a speech bubble show every call.
- Run: hold the Hold to run button, press and hold anywhere on the park, or hold Space, the Right arrow or D. Your speed builds the longer you hold.
- Freeze: let go when the dino calls red light. You have a little over half a second to stop. If you are still moving after that, or start again before green light, you go back to the start line. You are never out of the round.
- Yellow light: everyone slows to a walk until the next call. The speed meter shows the limit. Yellow can be switched off in the menu.
- Tricky calls: some green lights and red lights are very short, so the dino can turn around quickly and turn back. Sometimes it says “Red… wagon” or a similar word. That is not a real call, so keep running. Tricky calls can be switched off too.
Game modes
- Race (best of 3): you race three CPU kids. Cora is careful, starts late and sometimes stops for a fake call. Max is steady. Sam is fast and bold but often gets sent back for moving on red. The first kid to touch the stoplight wins the round, and the first to win 2 rounds wins the race. Your race wins are saved.
- Endless streak: you play alone. Each time red light is called while you are running and you freeze in time, your streak goes up by one. Reaching the dino starts a new lap with a little less time to stop. Being caught ends the run, and your best streak is saved.
- Stoplight caller: no one runs on screen. The dino calls the lights aloud at random times, with longer gaps, so real kids can play outside. Use the Sound button to mute the voice, or Next call now to skip ahead.
Tips
- Hold full, let go fast. Speed takes about a second to build. Let go as soon as you hear “red.”
- Don’t jump the gun. Wait for the full word after “Red…”, and don’t restart before green light.
- Watch Sam. The fastest CPU kid is the main threat. When Sam gets sent back, push for the stoplight.
FAQ
Is this red light green light game free?
Yes. There is no account and nothing to install.
What happens if I move on red light?
You go back to the start line, just like on the playground, and keep playing from there. In Endless mode, being caught ends your streak run.
What does yellow light mean?
Yellow light means move slowly. In this game, every runner is limited to a slow walk until the next call.
Can kids use it to play outside?
Yes. Stoplight caller mode turns the game into a voice that calls the lights at random times. Some browsers have no speaking voice, so each call also shows on screen with a sound.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. Press and hold the park or the Hold to run button. Touching the game does not scroll the page.
Can I pause?
Press P or Esc, or use the Pause button. The game also pauses when you switch tabs.
