Kakuro is a number logic puzzle that works like a crossword made of sums, also called Cross Sums. You fill the grid with digits from 1 to 9, and each run of white cells has to add up to the clue beside it. Play Kakuro online free in your browser, with no download or sign-up, on a computer, tablet or phone. Every puzzle has exactly one solution.

How to play

White cells are the ones you fill in. Dark clue cells are split by a diagonal line and hold the sums.

  • Read the clues: the number above the diagonal (top right) is the total of the white run to its right. The number below the diagonal (bottom left) is the total of the run beneath it. A clue cell can hold one sum or both.
  • Fill the runs: put a digit from 1 to 9 in every white cell so each across and down run adds up to its clue.
  • No repeats: a digit can only appear once in a run. A 2-cell run that adds to 4 must be 1 and 3, never 2 and 2.
  • Finish the grid: the puzzle is solved the moment every white cell holds the right digit. The timer stops and your time is saved.

Choose 6×6 Easy, 8×8 Medium or 10×10 Hard. The size counts the clue row and column, so a 10×10 puzzle has a 9×9 playing area. Each size has its own set of puzzles, and the puzzle menu marks the ones you have solved.

Controls and tools

  • Digits: click or tap a white cell, then press 1 to 9 or tap the number pad. Arrow keys move between white cells, and Backspace or Delete clears one.
  • Notes: press N or the Notes button to add or remove pencil marks. Shift plus a digit adds a note directly. When you place a digit, it is removed from the notes in the same runs.
  • Combinations helper: the panel under the number pad lists every set of digits that makes the sum for the selected cell’s across and down runs. Sets that still fit your digits are green, and the rest are crossed out. You can hide it.
  • Conflicts: with Show conflicts on, digits turn red when they repeat in a run, when a full run misses its sum, or when a run already adds up to more than its clue allows.
  • Check, Hint, Undo and Redo: Check marks any wrong digit. Hint fills the selected cell, or the first empty cell if the selected one is already right, and adds 15 seconds to your time. Undo and Redo (Z and Y) step through your moves.
  • Pause: press P or Esc. The grid is hidden while the timer is stopped, and the game also pauses if you switch tabs.

Your best time for each size and any unfinished puzzle are saved in your browser.

Kakuro tips

  • Learn the fixed sums. Some totals can only be made one way. Two cells adding to 3 are always 1 and 2, and two cells adding to 17 are always 8 and 9. Three cells adding to 6 must be 1, 2 and 3, and three adding to 24 must be 7, 8 and 9.
  • Cross the runs. Every white cell sits in one across run and one down run. A cell that must be 1 or 2 across and 2 or 4 down has to be 2.
  • Use the extremes. A big sum in a short run forces high digits, and a small sum forces low ones. Four cells adding to 11 are 1, 2, 3 and 5, so none of them can be 6 or higher.
  • Pencil in candidates. Note the possible digits for tricky cells and cross them off as nearby runs fill in.

FAQ

Is this Kakuro game free?

Yes. It is free with no account and nothing to install. Choose a size and start solving.

Does every puzzle have only one solution?

Yes. Each puzzle was checked with a solver to make sure there is exactly one way to fill the grid.

What is the difference between the sizes?

6×6 Easy has short runs and few cells, so it is a good place to learn. The larger grids have more and longer runs.

Can I play Kakuro on my phone?

Yes. Tap a cell and use the on-screen number pad. The grid scales to fit small screens and will not scroll the page while you play.

How is Kakuro different from Sudoku?

Both use the digits 1 to 9 with no repeats, but Sudoku is about filling rows, columns and boxes, while Kakuro is about sums. Try our free Sudoku too, or Picross for a picture logic puzzle with clues on the edges.
