Greek Mythology Game is a hands-on myth adventure in four parts. Match the twelve Olympian gods to their symbols, guide Theseus through the labyrinth with Ariadne’s thread, take on four of the labors of Heracles, and read short retellings of famous myths in the quiz scrolls. Play it online free in your browser, with no download, on a laptop, Chromebook or phone. Every level you finish unlocks a myth note.

How to play

Pick a place on the map. Levels unlock in order, and your stars, myth notes and badges are saved in your browser.

Mount Olympus

  • Each round shows four gods on the left and four cards on the right. Tap a god, then the card that belongs to them.
  • Level 1 matches gods to their symbols, such as the thunderbolt of Zeus, the trident of Poseidon, the owl of Athena and the lyre of Apollo. Level 2 matches them to their domains, such as the sea, the harvest or the hunt.
  • There are three rounds, so you meet all twelve Olympians. A wrong match counts as a mistake, and fewer mistakes earn more stars.
  • Lists of the twelve vary. The game uses Dionysus; some ancient lists name Hestia, goddess of the hearth, instead.

The Labyrinth

  • Walk Theseus from the entrance to the heart of the maze. Use the arrow keys, swipe, or tap beside him.
  • Ariadne’s thread unwinds behind him as a red line, and there is only so much of it. If you walk into a dead end, step back along the thread to wind it up again.
  • Once Theseus reaches the center, the torches go out. Only the area around him is lit, so follow the glowing thread back to the entrance.
  • There are three labyrinths, each bigger than the last. The fewer times you wind back the thread on the way in, the more stars you earn.

Labors of Heracles

  • The Nemean lion: no weapon could pierce its hide, so Heracles wrestled it. Tap Grip (or press Space) when the moving marker is inside the gold zone. Five grips win; three slips and the lion gets away.
  • The Lernaean hydra: tap a head to cut it, then tap the glowing neck to seal it with the torch of Iolaus. Wait too long and two heads grow back. The torch needs a moment to heat up between seals, so do not cut too many at once. Finish by burying the immortal head under a rock.
  • The Augean stables: tap channel tiles to turn them until both rivers, the Alpheus and the Peneus, flow to the stable gate. Fewer turns earn more stars.
  • Cerberus: notes fall toward the three heads. Tap the right lane (or press 1, 2 or 3) as each note reaches the line. Fill the calm meter before the song ends.
  • The lion, hydra and Cerberus run in real time. Press P or Esc to pause.

Myth Scrolls

  • Each of the three scrolls has six myths, from Prometheus and Pandora to Perseus, Icarus, the wooden horse of Troy and Orpheus.
  • Read the short retelling, then answer the question. After each answer you see the right one, plus a note on where the story comes from or how versions differ.
  • Get 4 of 6 right to pass a scroll.

Tips

  • Learn the symbols first. The domains level is easier once you know the symbols: the owl and wisdom both point to Athena, and the bow and the hunt both point to Artemis.
  • Look before you walk. In the labyrinth the whole maze is visible on the way in. Trace the route with your eyes before you move, and you can reach the center without wasting thread.
  • Cut one head at a time. Against the hydra, cut a head, seal it, and wait for the torch to be ready before the next cut.
  • Work back from the gate. In the stables, turn the tile above the gate first, then follow the channel upward toward each river.
