Dungeon Game is a compact, turn-based roguelike dungeon crawler you can play free in your browser, with no download or sign-up. Guide Dino the adventurer down 10 procedurally generated floors of rooms and corridors, poof slimes, bats and skeletons into puffs of smoke, and reach the grumpy cave troll waiting in the Troll’s Den. You get one life per run, so every step counts.

How to play

The dungeon is a grid, and every move is one turn. When you step, attack, drink a potion or wait, each awake enemy then takes its turn. Nothing moves while you think, so take your time.

  • Move and fight: use the arrow keys or WASD, swipe on the dungeon, tap beside Dino or use the on-screen D-pad. Walk into an enemy to attack it.
  • Combat math: damage is the attacker’s ATK minus the defender’s DEF, with a minimum of 1. Health bars show above hurt enemies, and your HP bar sits above the map.
  • Fog of war: you only see a few tiles around Dino. Rooms you have explored stay on the map in shadow, but enemies only show while they are in sight.
  • Find the stairs: each floor has one staircase down. Taking it brings you to the merchant mole’s shop, then on to the next floor with +2 max HP.
  • Keys and vaults: from floor 2, a floor may have a locked vault door. Its key is always somewhere you can reach without going through the door. A vault holds a chest of gold plus a potion or scroll.
  • Items: healing potions restore 12 HP, a map scroll reveals the whole floor, and a teleport scroll moves you somewhere at least 8 tiles away. Swords turn up on floors 2, 5 and 8, armor on floors 3, 6 and 9.
  • Win or lose: when your HP hits 0 the run ends with a summary of your deepest floor, enemies poofed, gold found, turns and score. Poof the cave troll to win.

The monsters

  • Slime: slow-witted but splits into two mini slimes when poofed.
  • Bat: flutters at random half the time, so it is hard to predict.
  • Skeleton archer: shoots you from up to 5 tiles away along a clear row or column. Walls and doors block its arrows.
  • Goblin: steals gold when it hits you, then runs. Catch it to get the gold back.
  • Ghost: drifts straight through walls, but only moves every other turn.
  • Iron beetle: slow and heavily armored. Bring a good sword.
  • Mimic: looks just like a treasure chest until you bump it.
  • Cave troll: the boss. It is slow at first, but at half health it stomps, calls down slimes and speeds up.

Strategy tips

  • Fight in corridors. In a narrow passage only one enemy can reach you at a time.
  • Break line of sight with archers. Step out of their row or column, then close in from around a corner.
  • Watch your gold near goblins. Spend it in the shop before you meet more of them, or finish a goblin off before it can flee.
  • Use the wait key. Waiting lets a slow beetle or ghost come to you, so you strike first when it arrives.
  • Save a teleport scroll for emergencies. It is the best way out when you are surrounded.
  • Plan the shop. ATK and DEF upgrades get pricier each time you buy one, so balance them with max HP and potions before the troll.

FAQ

Is this dungeon game free?

Yes. It’s completely free with no account and no install, on desktop, Chromebook or phone.

What is a roguelike?

A roguelike is a dungeon crawler with turn-based movement, randomly generated levels and permanent death, named after the 1980 game Rogue. Each run is a fresh dungeon, and losing means starting again from floor 1.

What is the daily dungeon?

The daily dungeon uses a seed made from today’s date, so everyone who plays it that day gets the same floors. Your best daily score is saved alongside your all-time best run.

Is every floor beatable?

Every floor is checked as it is built: all of it is connected, the stairs can be reached without a key, and every locked door’s key can be reached before the door. Whether you survive the monsters is up to you.

Does it save my progress?

Your best run and daily best are saved in your browser. Runs themselves are permadeath, so reloading the page ends the run in progress.

Is it scary or gory?

No. The monsters are cartoony, and defeated enemies simply poof into smoke.
