Controls

  • Arrow keys hop one square at a time (no diagonal).
  • Cross 4 lanes of cars (don't get hit).
  • Cross 4 lanes of river by riding on logs (don't fall in).
  • Reach one of 5 lily pads at the top. Fill all 5 to advance to the next level.

Frogger is the 1981 arcade game by Konami (published by Sega in the US). Get a frog from the bottom of the screen to one of 5 lily pads at the top. Between you and them: 4 lanes of traffic, then 4 lanes of river. The river is only crossable by hopping onto moving logs — fall in the water and you die. One of the defining arcade games of the early 1980s, with cultural impact ranging from Seinfeld jokes to Konami’s 50+ subsequent re-releases.

How to play

  • Arrow keys — hop one square at a time. No diagonal.
  • Lower half = road. 4 lanes of cars moving alternating directions.
  • Upper half = river. CANNOT walk on water — you’ll drown. Hop onto logs and ride them.
  • Reach one of 5 lily pad slots at the top. Hit the green pad to score.
  • Fill all 5 lily pads to clear the level. Next level, everything moves faster.
  • 3 lives total.

Scoring

  • Each hop forward: +10 points.
  • Each lily pad reached: +100 points.
  • Time bonus: faster crossing = more points.
  • All 5 pads filled = +500 bonus + next level.
  • Snake/turtle bonus: occasional bonus targets appear on lily pads for extra points.

Beginner strategy

  • Time road crossings. Wait at safe strips between lanes. Watch rhythm of two adjacent lanes; hop when both have a gap.
  • Logs drift you off-screen. Riding too long carries you into the wall — hop off in time.
  • Middle safe strip is your friend. Between road and river is one safe row. Park there and plan the river crossing.
  • Edge pads are hardest. Leftmost and rightmost pads require precise timing. Save them for last.
  • Don’t backtrack into traffic. Pressing Down rarely saves you.

Intermediate strategy

  • The 5-pad sequence. Plan which pad to fill in which order. Easier pads first (centre), hardest last (corners).
  • Log riding. A long log is safer than a short one. Time your hops accordingly.
  • Lane speed memory. Each lane has a fixed speed. Memorize the patterns for current level.
  • The “snake lane” challenge. Later levels add snakes that hunt your frog on logs. Avoid lanes with snakes.
  • Bonus crocodile mouth. Sometimes lily pads disguise crocodile mouths. Look before you leap.

Advanced strategy

  • The speed scaling. Each level, lane speeds increase. By level 5-7, reflexes are tested.
  • Pattern memorization. Top players memorize lane patterns and pre-plan optimal hop sequences.
  • Bonus point farming. Snake / turtle bonuses can add significant score if reached.
  • 1,000,000+ records. The original Frogger has no kill screen. Runs can theoretically continue indefinitely.
  • Speedrunning. Frogger speedrun categories exist for various platforms.

Why Frogger is harder than it looks

Frogger is one of the few classic arcade games where the player isn’t directly attacked — there are no enemies hunting you. Everything that kills you is passively moving in a fixed pattern. The challenge is purely spatial timing. This makes Frogger one of the few “pure” arcade games of the era, and one of the few where speedrunning is fundamentally a routing puzzle.

Frogger history

  • 1981 — Frogger released: Konami’s hit. Sega licensed for US arcades.
  • 1982 — Atari 2600 port. Home version sells millions.
  • 1991 — Frogger 2: Threeedeep!: sequel with 3D-ish perspective.
  • 1997 — Frogger (PlayStation): 3D revival with multiple worlds.
  • 1998 — Seinfeld “The Frogger”: Frogger machine-moving episode. Cultural moment.
  • 2010s — Frogger Decades: mobile and modern console releases continue.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing road crossings. Wait for the right rhythm.
  • Forgetting log direction. Logs move in specific directions. Hop in the right one.
  • Hopping while logs drift. The frog moves with the log if you don’t hop in time.
  • Ignoring snakes/turtles. Later levels have hazards on logs too.
  • Missing lily pads. Position correctly — pads are smaller than the frog.

Variants

  • Frogger (original). The arcade classic.
  • Frogger 2. 3D-perspective sequel.
  • Frogger: The Great Quest. Action-adventure spinoff.
  • Crossy Road. Modern Frogger reimagining — chicken crosses roads.
  • Frogger Beyond. 3D platformer variant.

FAQ

  • Q: How many lanes? A: 4 traffic + 4 river + the safe strip between = 9 rows. 5 lily pads at top.
  • Q: Can I jump on water? A: No — you’ll drown. Logs only.
  • Q: How do I score? A: +10 per hop, +100 per pad, time bonuses. All 5 pads filled = +500 bonus.
  • Q: When does the speed reset? A: Each level, traffic and logs move faster. Reflexes degrade rapidly past level 5.

For other arcade classics, try Space Invaders, Centipede, Galaga, or Pacman.
