Controls

  • ← / → or A / D — move your ship left and right.
  • Space — fire.
  • Destroy all enemies to advance to the next wave.
  • Enemies in formation sway side to side; some break out and dive at you.
  • Diving enemies score double points.

Galaga is the 1981 Namco arcade game that perfected the formula Space Invaders pioneered — same vertical-shooter concept, but with dive-bombing enemies, capture-and-rescue mechanics, and Challenging Stages that became iconic. Designed by Shigeru Yokoyama as a direct sequel to Galaxian (1979), Galaga arguably surpassed both predecessors and is often cited as one of the greatest arcade games ever made.

How to play

  • Left / Right arrows — move ship horizontally.
  • Space — fire. You can have 2 bullets on screen at once (a Space Invaders improvement).
  • Aliens enter the screen in waves, forming a stationary 5-row formation at the top.
  • From the formation, individual aliens periodically detach and dive-bomb toward your ship, dropping bullets.
  • Surviving aliens return to formation; if you destroy them mid-dive, no return.
  • Clear all aliens to advance to the next stage.
  • Every 4 stages is a “Challenging Stage” — a bonus level with no enemy fire. Hit as many as possible for bonus points.
  • 3 lives. Get hit = lose a life.

The capture-and-rescue mechanic

Galaga’s signature mechanic: the boss alien (green/cyan) at the top can fire a tractor beam downward. If it catches your ship while you’re alive, your ship is CAPTURED and pulled into the formation. You lose a life and respawn — but if you destroy that boss while it’s holding your captured ship, the captured ship JOINS your active ship (dual fighter), doubling your firepower.

  • Step 1: intentionally get caught by the tractor beam.
  • Step 2: respawn with new life.
  • Step 3: when the boss with your captured ship dives again, shoot the boss before the captured ship is destroyed.
  • Reward: you regain your captured ship, attached to your new one. Twin-fighter mode = double firepower (but also wider hitbox).
  • Risk: if you shoot the captured ship by mistake, it’s gone forever.

Beginner strategy

  • Stay mobile. Standing still is death. Dive-bombing aliens predict your position and fire at where they expect you to be.
  • Side-strafing. Dive-bombers approach in arcs. Move opposite to their trajectory.
  • Shoot when stable. Firing while moving wastes bullets — your aim is less precise.
  • Don’t chase diving aliens. They’ll return to formation if you miss. Position to intercept their next approach.
  • Aim for the bosses. Boss aliens (green/cyan) take 2 hits and score double points.

Intermediate strategy

  • The Challenging Stage scoring. Every 4th stage is a bonus round. Hit 40+ aliens for “PERFECT BONUS” (10,000 points). Hit 36-39 for partial bonus.
  • Dive prediction. Aliens dive in fixed patterns based on the stage. Memorize the patterns of stages 1-10.
  • The corner zones. Sit near a corner — incoming dives are more predictable from one side than two.
  • Risk-reward of capture. Get captured deliberately for the dual-fighter bonus. The captured ship rescue is one of the biggest score multipliers in the game.
  • Star pattern memorization. Stages 5, 9, 13, etc. have specific enemy entry patterns. Knowing them lets you pre-position.

Advanced strategy: pattern play

  • Pattern shooting. Like Pac-Man, Galaga’s enemy AI is deterministic. Pattern players use known input sequences to maximize score per stage.
  • The dual fighter exploit. Twin fighters fire two bullets per shot. Used optimally, a dual fighter can clear a full Challenging Stage with minimal positioning.
  • Boss farming. On certain stages, bosses appear repeatedly. Triple-bonus boss kills can compound score rapidly.
  • The 1,500,000+ benchmark. Considered “perfect play” level. Top players exceed it routinely.
  • Galaga has no kill screen — runs can theoretically go forever. The all-time arcade record exceeds 30,000,000 points.

Galaga’s history

  • 1979 — Galaxian: Namco’s predecessor introduces dive-bombing enemies to the genre.
  • 1981 — Galaga: Shigeru Yokoyama’s improved sequel. Adds capture mechanic, Challenging Stages, dual fighter.
  • 1982 — Western release: Bally Midway licenses Galaga for U.S. arcades. Becomes an arcade staple.
  • 1984 — Gaplus: sequel/reimagining with parallax-scrolling stars.
  • 1995 — Galaga: Destination Earth: 3D-rendered console version.
  • 2007 — Galaga Legions: XBLA modernization with persistent twin firepower.
  • 2018 — Galaga remains an arcade icon. Featured in collections like Namco Museum and Atari Vault.

Why Galaga is loved

  • Risk/reward depth. The capture-rescue mechanic adds layers Space Invaders lacked.
  • Challenging Stages. Bonus rounds with no fire are pure shooting fun — palate-cleansers between intense waves.
  • Pattern-based scoring. Encourages mastery — expert players can score wildly more than beginners.
  • Visual polish. Detailed alien sprites with personality, smooth dive animations.
  • Music. The pulsing arcade theme is iconic and instantly recognizable.

Common mistakes

  • Standing still. Galaga’s enemies AIM at you. Move continuously.
  • Trying to shoot bullets. Alien bullets pass through your fire. Dodge, don’t shoot.
  • Killing your captured ship. Shooting the boss is right; shooting the captured ship is fatal.
  • Ignoring Challenging Stages. 10,000 bonus points for PERFECT is huge. Practice these.
  • Camping in the centre. Centre position is the most-targeted by dive-bombers. Edge positions are safer.

FAQ

  • Q: What’s the difference between Galaxian and Galaga? A: Galaga (sequel) adds: 2 bullets on screen, capture-rescue, Challenging Stages, dual fighter, and refined enemy patterns. Galaxian was good; Galaga is better.
  • Q: How do I get the dual fighter? A: Let your ship get captured by a boss’s tractor beam. After respawning, destroy the boss that has your captured ship. The captured ship rejoins your active ship as a twin.
  • Q: How many waves does Galaga have? A: Endless. Galaga has no fixed end; runs continue until you lose all lives.
  • Q: What’s PERFECT in Challenging Stage? A: Hitting all 40 enemies in the stage. Bonus: 10,000 points.
