Cookie Clicker is the 2013 incremental “idle” game by French developer Julien “Orteil” Thiennot that defined an entire genre. Originally built in a single weekend as a parody of Facebook clicker games, it instead became one of the most-played browser games of the decade. The premise: click a giant cookie to bake cookies; spend cookies on generators (grandmas, farms, factories, banks); generators bake cookies passively; the cookies-per-second number grows exponentially. Hundreds of upgrades, achievements, prestige resets, and a sugar-lumps subgame keep the full version going for months.

How to play

  • Click the giant cookie to bake 1+ cookie per click.
  • Buy generators in the shop (right side) to bake passively.
  • Each generator costs cookies; cost increases 15% per item bought.
  • Progress saves automatically (every 250ms).
  • Reset save wipes everything for a fresh start.
  • Goal: maximize cookies per second. The game has no win condition.

Generator tiers

  • Cursor (15 cookies, +0.1/sec). Bonus to click power per 10 owned.
  • Grandma (100, +1/sec). The classic.
  • Farm (1.1K, +8/sec).
  • Mine (12K, +47/sec).
  • Factory (130K, +260/sec).
  • Bank (1.4M, +1.4K/sec).
  • Temple (20M, +7.8K/sec).
  • Wizard Tower (330M, +44K/sec).
  • Original Cookie Clicker has 18 tiers; this version has 8.

Beginner strategy

  • Click the cookie initially. First 30 seconds, click rapidly to buy your first 10 cursors and a few grandmas.
  • Buy upgrades when affordable. Each upgrade pays back quickly via increased cps.
  • Don’t waste on click power. Click upgrades cap fast. Passive cps scales without limit.
  • Each tier has a “sweet spot.” Buy ~10 of each tier before moving to the next. After 10, the 15% compounding makes it slower than buying the next tier.
  • Let it run. Cookie Clicker rewards idle play. Close the tab, come back hours later.

Intermediate strategy

  • Optimal next purchase = best CPS-per-cookie-spent ratio. For each available generator, calculate cost ÷ CPS gain. Buy the lowest ratio.
  • The 15% compounding rule. Each subsequent generator costs 15% more. The 25th grandma costs ~3,300 cookies. The 100th costs 1.1M. Move tiers before grinding too long.
  • Idle vs active play. Active clicking is good early; passive idling dominates mid/late game.
  • The “soft cap” of click power. Each 10 cursors gives +1 click power. So 100 cursors = +10 click. But your cps is already 1000+ by then, so clicking is negligible.
  • Achievements as goals. The original game has 600+ achievements. Each gives a milk multiplier that boosts global cps.

Advanced strategy (full Cookie Clicker)

  • Prestige and Ascensions. Reset progress to gain Heavenly Chips, which provide permanent bonuses. Repeat indefinitely.
  • Golden cookie strategies. Random golden cookies appear that grant huge bonuses (multiplier waves, click frenzies). Wait for them to compound.
  • Building synergies. Each tier of building has its own multiplier upgrades. Synergy upgrades multiply lower tiers based on higher tiers.
  • The wrinkler exploit. Wrinklers attack your cookies in the “grandmapocalypse” event. Letting them suck cookies and popping them later gives 110% of what they took. Math advantage.
  • Sugar lumps subgame. Daily resource for permanent building upgrades. Optimize sugar timing.

The genre Cookie Clicker created

  • Idle game genre. Before 2013, “idle games” weren’t a recognized category. Cookie Clicker created it.
  • Adventure Capitalist, Realm Grinder, AdVenture Communist. Major idle games inspired directly.
  • Mobile idle games. Tap-Tap-Heroes, Idle Heroes — billions of downloads collectively.
  • Idle game design principles. Compound growth, infinite progression, partial automation. Now standard in mobile gaming.
  • Industry impact. Idle game mechanics now appear in major AAA titles (Diablo Immortal’s idle reward systems, Genshin Impact’s daily progress).

Why incremental games hook players

  • Always-growing numbers. Visible progress at all times. Strong dopamine response.
  • Variable rate reinforcement. Achievements unlock at unpredictable intervals.
  • Low effort. No real challenge; just click occasionally.
  • Offline progress. Earn while doing other things. Coming back to a bigger bank is satisfying.
  • Endless progression. Numbers can always grow more. No “endgame” cap.

Common mistakes

  • Click-grinding past usefulness. Once cps >> click power, clicking is wasted time.
  • Hoarding cookies. Sitting on cookies costs you growth time. Spend.
  • Grinding one tier too long. The 15% compounding makes the 50th grandma 1,100x more expensive than the 1st. Tier up.
  • Never resetting. Full Cookie Clicker rewards prestige resets. Even basic versions benefit from occasional fresh starts.

FAQ

  • Q: Is there a goal? A: No fixed goal. The game progresses indefinitely. Some players target specific achievement counts or specific cps milestones.
  • Q: Does Cookie Clicker run offline? A: This version saves to localStorage. The full Cookie Clicker has Steam Cloud sync and offline progression.
  • Q: What happens after I get all generators? A: Buy more of each tier. Each successive purchase costs 15% more but adds the same CPS.
  • Q: Best CPS-to-cost building? A: Generally the highest tier you can afford. Cost-per-CPS optimization favors higher tiers.
