Boat Game is a top-down speedboat game where the water behaves like water. Your boat carries its momentum, slides wide when you turn hard at speed, leaves a spreading wake behind it and gets pushed sideways by harbor currents. There are two modes: Harbor Pilot, where you bring the boat gently into a marked berth across 10 levels, and Buoy Race, a time trial through buoy gates against a ghost of your best lap. You can play Boat Game online free in your browser with no download, on a keyboard, a mouse or a phone’s touch screen.
How to play
Press Up or W to open the throttle and Down or S to reverse. Steer with Left and Right or A and D. On a phone or tablet, use the on-screen GAS, REV and arrow buttons below the game, or hold your finger on the water and the boat will turn and motor toward it. With a mouse, hold the button down on the water to do the same.
- Momentum: let go of the throttle and the boat keeps gliding. Reverse is your brake, so use it early.
- Drift: the hull grips the water far better going forward than sideways, so a fast turn swings the bow around while the boat keeps sliding the way it was going. Slow down before tight turns and the boat follows your line.
- Steering needs flow: the rudder works best at speed. At a standstill the boat turns only slowly, and a touch of throttle helps swing the bow around.
- Currents: shaded water with moving arrows is a current. It carries the boat along with it, so you have to point a little upstream to hold a straight course.
Harbor Pilot
Each level has one berth marked with a dashed yellow outline and arrows showing which way the bow must face. To dock, stop the whole boat inside the berth, lined up with the arrows, at 1.5 knots or less, and hold it there for one second. A green ring fills as you hold. Near the berth, the HUD speed turns green or red against the 3 knot limit.
Any contact with a pier, quay, moored boat, buoy or the shore above 3 knots counts as a bump and costs hull, with harder hits costing more. If the hull reaches zero, the level ends and you start it again. Gentle contact under 3 knots is fine.
Every level awards up to three stars: one for docking, one for docking with no bumps and one for beating the par time. Docking a level unlocks the next one. Later harbors add moored boats, breakwaters, currents, a side-on berth and an alongside berth at a fuel pier. Your stars and best times are saved in your browser.
Buoy Race
Buoy Race is a time trial on three courses: Lagoon Loop, Slalom Run and Rock Garden. The clock starts when you cross the checkered start line. Steer between each numbered pair of buoys in order; the next gate glows yellow, and an arrow at the edge of the screen points to it when it is out of view. After the last gate, cross the start line again to finish. Clipping a gate buoy adds 2 seconds, and rocks and islands bounce you off and cost you speed.
A new best time saves your whole run, and next time a faint blue ghost boat replays that lap so you can see where you gain or lose time.
Tips
- Brake earlier than feels natural. From full speed the boat needs a long distance to stop. Start reversing well before the berth and coast in the last few lengths.
- Line up outside the berth. Get the boat pointing straight down the berth while you still have room, then come in slowly. Turning inside a narrow berth is how most bumps happen.
- Race wide, exit fast. In Buoy Race, swing slightly wide before a gate so you pass through it already pointing at the next one. A sliding boat loses speed.
FAQ
Is Boat Game free?
Yes. It is free to play with no account and nothing to install.
Does it work on phones and Chromebooks?
Yes. On touch screens, use the GAS, REV and steering buttons or hold on the water to steer. Touching the game won’t scroll the page. On a Chromebook or laptop, use the arrow keys or WASD in any modern browser.
Can I pause the game?
Press P or Esc, or use the Pause button. It also pauses on its own if you switch tabs. Press R to restart the current level or race.
Why didn’t my boat dock?
The whole boat must be inside the outline, facing the arrows, at 1.5 knots or less for a full second. If the outline is green but the ring doesn’t fill, you are still too fast.
