Higher or Lower is the simple card or number guessing game where you predict whether the next card/number will be higher or lower than the current one. Often played with a standard deck of cards, the game tests probability estimation and risk assessment. The 2008 Galaxy TV show “Pointless” used a related guessing format, but the card version is centuries old.

How to play

  • The first card is revealed.
  • Guess: will the next card be HIGHER or LOWER?
  • If correct, continue. If wrong, game over (or lose a life).
  • Score = consecutive correct guesses.
  • Streaks are the main goal.

Beginner strategy

  • Low cards (2, 3, 4): guess higher. 80%+ chance of being right.
  • High cards (Q, K, A): guess lower. 80%+ chance.
  • Mid cards (7-9): 50/50. Either guess is fine.
  • Aces are highest. Ace shown = guess lower.
  • Track played cards. Some games include a tracking system (deck depletion increases card probabilities).

The probability math

  • Card 2: 12/13 chance higher.
  • Card 3: 11/13 chance higher.
  • Card 7 (middle): 6/13 higher, 6/13 lower.
  • Card 11 (Jack): 11/13 chance lower.
  • Card 13 (King): 12/13 chance lower.
  • Note: Equal cards usually count as wins or split (depends on variant).

FAQ

  • Q: What’s the highest card? A: Usually Ace (= 14 in many variants). Or sometimes Ace = 1.
  • Q: What if cards are equal? A: Game variants handle ties differently — push, win, or lose.
  • Q: Best score? A: With perfect probability play, average streak is 6-8 correct.
  • Q: Pure luck or strategy? A: Probability estimation. Skill is recognizing favorable bets.
