Army Game is a free turn-based tactics game with plastic army men. You command the green toy soldiers against the tan army on a kid’s bedroom floor, in the backyard, in a sandbox and across the kitchen table. Play it in your browser with no download, on a computer or phone. It is a family-friendly toy soldier game: nobody gets hurt, and a toy that is hit just tips over and falls out of the battle.

How to play

Each mission is a 10 by 10 grid of squares. You move first, then the tan army takes its turn.

  • Move, then act. Tap a green toy to select it. Blue squares show where it can go. Tap one to move, then tap a tan toy with a red ring to shoot it. Each toy can move once and act once per turn.
  • Hit chance. The number above each target is your chance to hit. Every square past two costs 4 percent, except for the Sniper, who has no range penalty. Shooting from the hill adds 10 percent.
  • Cover. A toy standing next to a block, on the side you are shooting from, is in cover. A LEGO-style brick takes 25 off your hit chance, and a tall toy block, stack of books or cereal box takes 40. Cover doesn’t help against a shot from right next to it.
  • Line of sight. Tall blocks, books and cereal boxes block shots completely. Low bricks don’t, so you can shoot over them.

The toys

  • Rifleman: moves 3 squares and shoots up to 5.
  • Scout: moves 5 squares but only shoots up to 3.
  • Bazooka: slow, with a 4-square range, but a hit on a toy tank does 3 damage.
  • Sniper: moves 2 and shoots up to 8 squares with no penalty for distance.
  • Medic: can’t shoot. Once per mission it can stand a toppled buddy next to it back up with 1 health.
  • Toy tank: 4 health, moves 3, shoots up to 5 and does 2 damage per hit.

Small bars under each toy show its health. Tan guards marked “zz” stay put until one of your toys comes within six squares.

Missions and stars

There are 12 missions with five kinds of goal:

  • Topple: knock over every tan toy before the round limit.
  • Capture the flag spot: move any green toy onto the bottle cap flag.
  • Hold the hill: keep a toy on the pillow, dirt mound or sand pile, with no tan toy on it, for 3 rounds in a row. You can also win by toppling every tan toy.
  • Escort the Medic: get the Medic to an exit square. If the Medic topples, the mission fails.
  • Survive: keep at least one green toy standing until the last round while tan reinforcements arrive.

A win earns 1 star. You get a second star for finishing by the par round and a third for ending with every green toy standing. Winning a mission unlocks the next one, and your stars are saved in your browser.

Tips

  • End every move next to a block. The tan army shoots back, and cover can cut its hit chance almost in half.
  • Check the number before you shoot. Moving one square to flank a toy in cover often turns a 40 percent shot into a 70 percent one.
  • Save the bazookas for tanks. A rifle hit only does 1 damage to a 4-health tank. Two bazooka hits finish it.
  • Keep the Sniper back. It hits just as well at 8 squares as at 2, so there is no reason to walk it into danger.

FAQ

Is Army Game free?

Yes. It’s free with no account or install.

Is it violent?

No. The soldiers are plastic toys on a playroom floor. A hit toy tips over and drops out of the game.

Is the computer opponent fair?

Yes. The tan army follows the same rules you do: the same move ranges, line of sight, cover and hit chances. Every shot rolls against the percentage it shows.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap to select, move and shoot. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys and Enter, N for the next toy, W to wait, E to end your turn and P or Esc to pause.

Can I replay a mission for more stars?

Yes. Open Missions and pick any unlocked mission. Only your best star count is kept.
