How to Win at Minesweeper

Minesweeper bundled with Windows 3.1 in 1992; it’s bundled with every Windows release through 8.1. It’s a pure logic puzzle disguised as a clicker. World-record Beginner times are under 1 second. Expert (30×16, 99 mines) world record is ~40 seconds. Here are the techniques that get you from beginner to expert.

Technique 1: First-click safety

Almost every modern Minesweeper (including ours) guarantees your first click is safe — and usually opens up a large area. Always click in the centre of the board first.

Why centre? More information per click. Edge clicks reveal at most 5 neighbouring cells; centre clicks reveal up to 8.

Technique 2: Number meanings

A ‘1’ next to an unopened cell means EXACTLY one of its 8 neighbours is a mine. If you can see 7 are open, the 8th MUST be the mine. Flag it.

A ‘2’ means EXACTLY 2 are mines. ‘3’ = 3. And so on. Count the unrevealed neighbours; subtract any you’ve already flagged. Whatever’s left is the number of mines hiding in the remaining unrevealed cells.

Technique 3: The 1-1-X pattern

The most common deduction pattern. If you see two 1s next to each other with one unrevealed cell at the end, that cell is safe.

Why? The left ‘1’ could be satisfied by the cell between the two 1s OR by the third unrevealed cell. The right ‘1’ must be satisfied by ONE of two cells. If the cell between them is a mine, both 1s are satisfied — and the third cell can be either. If the third cell is a mine, the left 1 isn’t satisfied. So the middle cell must be the mine; the third is safe.

Technique 4: 1-2-1 pattern

If you see a ‘1’ next to a ‘2’ next to a ‘1’ in a row with three unrevealed cells below, the OUTER two cells are mines and the MIDDLE one is safe.

Reasoning: the ‘2’ sees 3 unrevealed cells and 2 are mines. The ‘1’s each see 2 unrevealed cells, one of which is a mine. The mine for each ‘1’ must be the one adjacent to it that isn’t shared with the other ‘1’. The middle cell of the three is the only one neither ‘1’ would flag. So the middle is safe; the outer two are mines.

Technique 5: Probability when stuck

Sometimes deduction fails and you must guess. The right approach: count the total unrevealed cells; subtract the number of already-flagged mines; divide by the remaining unrevealed cells to get the probability each cell is a mine.

Pick the cell with the lowest probability. Beginner: 10 mines, 81 cells = 12.3% per cell. Expert: 99/480 = 20.6% per cell. So at Expert, even your guesses are 80% safe in pure ignorance.

Technique 6: Pace and rhythm

World records aren’t about smarter deduction — they’re about faster pattern recognition. Top players click 8-10 cells per second. Learn the common patterns (1-1, 1-2-1, etc.) so you don’t think; you just see them and click.

Speed comes from familiarity. Play 100+ games at Beginner before moving to Intermediate; 500+ at Intermediate before Expert.
