How to Play Pyramid Solitaire — Strategy Guide for Beginners
Pyramid Solitaire is the rare card game where pure logic wins (and pure luck doesn’t matter — the initial deal does). Here’s how to play and how to maximize your win rate.
The basic rules
Deal 28 cards face-up into a 7-row pyramid. The bottom row has 7 cards; each row above has one less. Above the pyramid, leave space for the remaining 24 cards as a stock.
Objective: clear the entire pyramid. Remove pairs of cards that sum to 13 (Ace=1, J=11, Q=12, K=13). Kings can be removed alone (K = 13 by itself).
You can pair cards from the pyramid with each other, or with cards from the stock pile (one card at a time off the stock).
Strategy 1: Plan card-availability sequences
A card is ‘available’ for pairing only if both cards directly below it (its ‘children’ in the pyramid) have been removed. So removing the bottom row corner first opens up the corner card above. Plan multi-step sequences: remove these 4 cards in this order to make the King in row 5 available.
Strategy 2: Save the stock
Beginners burn through the stock to find pairs. Better: pair pyramid cards with each other first; only use stock when you must.
Stock cards are ‘wasted’ once they’re discarded (you typically can’t cycle through more than 1-2 times). Use them as your last resort, not your first.
Strategy 3: Don’t break sequences
If you pair a 7 of clubs with a 6 of hearts (sum 13), and the 7 is in row 3 with another required child still present, you’ve blocked yourself. Always check the sub-tree under any card before removing it.
Strategy 4: King prioritization
Since Kings remove alone, save them for moments when their removal frees up 2+ cards in the rows above. A single-card cost yielding 3 card removals is fantastic value.
Strategy 5: Recognize unwinnable hands
Some Pyramid Solitaire deals are mathematically unwinnable. If you can’t pair the bottom row’s corners (because their pyramidal children block them), the game might be dead from the start.
Don’t sink an hour into an unwinnable position. After 5 minutes of futile attempts, restart.
Why some hands feel impossible
If the pyramid has more than 2-3 cards of any single rank (e.g., 4 Aces buried in different rows), the math works against you. You need balanced rank distribution for clean pairings.
Most Pyramid Solitaire wins come from games where you happen to get a good shuffle. The win rate even with optimal play is around 40-50%, depending on stock rules.
