How to Be a Better Wordle Solver — Advanced Techniques
If you can already solve Wordle most days but want to lower your average from 4.5 guesses to 3.5, this guide covers the techniques that distinguish top-1% solvers from average ones. Most of these aren’t covered in beginner Wordle guides — they’re the meta-strategies that elite solvers actually use.
Master your opening pair
Pick TWO opening words you use every single game and test them together. The pair should test 10 of the most common letters: E, A, R, O, T, S, L, N, I, U.
Strong pairs: SALET + DOING (tests S, A, L, E, T, D, O, I, N, G — 10 unique letters). CRANE + SLOTH. STARE + COULD. Pick one, commit, never deviate. Consistency improves your average more than any other single change.
The 3-guess average rule
Top solvers know: by guess 3 you should always know exactly 4 letters (their values and either position or wrong-position). If you don’t, your openings were bad.
After SALET + DOING you’ve tested 10 letters. The remaining 16 (A through Z minus those 10) are: B, C, F, H, J, K, M, P, Q, R, U, V, W, X, Y, Z. Most are uncommon. So after 2 guesses, in 90% of games you have enough info to logically deduce the answer.
Anagram elimination
Often by guess 3-4 you know all 5 letters but not their positions. Don’t randomly guess. Enumerate.
If you know R, E, A, T, S are all in the word (no greens yet, all yellows), there are exactly 5×4×3×2×1 = 120 permutations. But Wordle uses ~2,300 real words, so only a few orderings exist. Most common: REATS (not a word), RATES, STARE, TEARS, TARES, ASTER, EATER (not all letters yet). Brain-search valid words.
The repeated-letter trap
Wordle solutions often contain double letters: APPLY, LOWLY, BOOST, ALLEY. If you’re stuck at guess 4-5 with 4 letters known, check whether any could be doubled. Don’t assume each guess letter is unique.
Common double-letter words in Wordle’s solution list: TIPSY, MERRY, NANNY, GOOSE, LLAMA, PROXY. Roughly 25% of solutions have at least one repeated letter.
Word frequency over alphabetic order
When deciding which permutation to guess, prioritise common words over rare ones. CHOSE > CHOES. PARTY > YAPRT. The NYT’s solution list skews toward 4,000-most-frequent English words. Bet on the common ones.
Hard mode trade-off
Wordle’s Hard Mode forces you to reuse greens and yellows. This restricts your information-gathering: you can’t use guess 3 to test unrelated letters.
In normal mode, the optimal strategy is to use guess 3 for pure information testing (a word with 5 new letters, even if you know it’s not the answer). Hard mode forbids this. So hard mode raises your average by 0.3-0.5 guesses. Decide if you want the bragging rights or the better stats.
The dictionary edge case
NYT has ~12,000 words in its valid-guess list but only ~2,300 in its solution list. The solution list skews toward common English. When you’re stuck between two valid guesses, the more common one is far more likely to be correct.
Examples: between PARER (valid) and PARED (valid), PARED is the much more common English word and far more likely to be the solution.
